Boat owners with young kids

DH & I had a boat pre-kids, but it needed a lot of work so we got rid of it. We're seriously considering getting a new on in next spring, but one of our concerns is how much use we'll get out of it with the baby. Our oldest will be at least 3 1/2 when we do, but our youngest will only be 1 come April. If you have/had a 1 year old & a boat did you find that you still used it a lot or were your trips out few & far between because of their age? Do you think we'd be better off waiting another year before we buy? Thanks!

So far we've gone out once. I'd wait another year.

Thanks for your reply. If you don't mind my asking, have you not gone out because it's tough to do with a 1 year old or just because you've been too busy?

Boat owners with young kids

DS is 7 months and we go out almost every weekend. He loves it. We use it just as much as before. He was 4.5 months when we first took him out.

DS is 15 months old and we go out all the time. He went for his first ride at 6 weeks - and lots last summer since I wasn't working. This summer, we take sunset rides a few times a week, plus always some weekend time.

Re: Boat owners with young kids

I think it depends on a few things
1- type of kid your youngest is
2- how big the boat is
3- how much seating etc

We have an 18 foot boat. Ds1 loves it! last year we didnt use it too much when DS2 was a NB. But this year we have used it a few times. DH will take DS1 out or we get a sitter for DS2 and the 3 of us go out! We would use it more if we could take DS2 but he is a crazy kid. I would worry having DS2 on the boat even though DS1 was on the boat at an earlier age.
DS2 is a wild child, He climbs on everything, hates being held, has little/no fear of things, has to be moving at all times etc. I just dont see him on the boat. We dont have cabin to contain him, we have limited seating as the boat is more a fishing boat than a leisure type set up etc.DS2 is 15m not I am hoping next summer will be better!

DS1 however is great on the boat and LOVES going out!

Thanks so much ladies! We've been taking ds#1 on my FIL's boat since he was 9m old & he loves it. They live OOS so we don't go too often, but he's always been very well behaved. I'm worried that ds#2, while angelic now, may be a little devil when he gets older & be a climber w/no fear like your ds Kelly...I guess we won't know for sure for a while lol I like your idea though & I guess we can always ask my parents to watch him while we take out ds#1 if he is super active.

We originally were thinking about a center console, but decided that a 22' or so walk around would probably be a better fit so that my dh can still fish & we'll have a cabin for the kiddos. Your story & recommendations just confirmed that that would be a good fit for us, so thank you Chat Icon

my DS is crazy and no fear. He is 7 mons and crawling and climbing on everything and will be walking by 8 months (Im guessing). We still take him because we want him used to beign on the boat from an early age. That way he will learn how to behave on the boat.

Re: Boat owners with young kids

Stupid question--- for those who bring babies on your boats, did you have them wear lifejackets? Do they sell lifejackets in baby size?

My DH wants a boat in the worst way, and I think we should wait b/c our youngest is only 10 months, and it seems unsafe to bring a baby on a boat to me...

A child has to be in a life jacket by law unless they are in the cabin.

Yes they make life jackets for babies/toddlers/children.

The ones for babies are tough for them to wear due to the size (under 30lbs I think) My DS is a peanut and he hates it but its not a negoitable issue and after a bit he calms down.

This exactly. DS wears a life jacket every time he's on a boat. Look for one that is Coast Guard approved & that has the piece that goes behind their head - it's supposed to help them keep their faces up above the water...

Our DC are always in Coast Guard approved life vests even when in the cabin. We used with ones with the collar when they were 8-30 lb.
