How is Settlers different than the regular game? We play regular Catan with the kids and love it, but we are looking for new games to put under the tree.

How is Settlers different than the regular game? We play regular Catan with the kids and love it, but we are looking for new games to put under the tree.
Is Catan the card game? I know nothing about that, so I can't really compare. But Settlers is very competitive and you sometimes need to get mean with people (cutting off people to build a road, not trading with them, building a settlement where they want to, etc.).

Board game for adults
Not a party game since only one person can play at a time but we like Rush Hour. There are plastic, colorful versions but there's also a nicer version.
