Blankets - When did you start letting DC use them to sleep?
Just curious to see what everyone else does/has been doing. DD is 7 mos old, and she still sleeps without a blanket in her crib. When are babies typically "out of the woods" with SIDS? Are they ever? Is it only a scare for newborns?
Thanks!!!

Grace had one for swaddling only until around 6 months. Once she could roll over both ways I stopped worrying about it. She was fine.
Jack still doesn't have one since he is hot baby. He would sweat. But I would again at 6 months if he needed it. I feel once they can move around on their own, its ok.

Re: Blankets - When did you start letting DC use them to sleep?
As a SIDS mother, I don't give my kids blankets or pillows until they are out of the crib and in a twin bed. My oldest DD was 17 months old and my youngest was 15 months old.
The topic of SIDS came up recently here: linky to SIDS topic

It drops dramatically at 1. But after 1 the name changes. People die randomly every day and age for no known reason. There is no way to know if a 30 year old died for the same reason a month old died since they don't know what causes it KWIM?
Also a common misconception is that they only die asleep. My son was wide awake in my husbands arms.
As a SIDS mom who had met and talked to many other SIDS and child loss parents I believe there is LOTS of reasons for SIDS babies and children. I believe all we can do as parents is avoid the things that have been linked to SIDS and hope for the best.
SUDC
ETA:I don't post to scare people. I just try to change peoples way of thinking that the minute they turn 1 they are safe and parents let there guard down. They start going against the things they were told was unsafe to do during infancy.

Thank you so much for posting this. I didn't see it when it was originally posted and I had no idea you lost a little one to SIDS. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Gianna is a "hot baby," and I have no need to use a blanket with her yet. I think I'll do as a few of you mentioned and wait until she's into a big girl bed to use a blanket. It only takes one time to be caught off guard, and I'm not willing to risk anything. There are so many great pjs out there now anyway that are just as warm as blankets. She'll suffice without one.

Re: Blankets - When did you start letting DC use them to sleep?
I only let my son use blankets at around 2 years old. I know 2 people that let their DC use a blanket...one was 9 months old the other was 6 months old..and both woke up to a dead baby. The baby got tangled up and suffocated. Even after they are old enough to roll around. My DS is now 4 years old and I still get nervous!!

DS is 11.5 months old and we still use a sleep sack. he doesn't sleep as well without it.
he tosses and turns a lot so i don't think a blanket would do much good. if he can wear a sleep sack till he is 2 that is what we'll do!
