Black tie wedding
Do you have to wear a LONG dress? Do the guys have to wear Tux's? The wedding is in the evening in NYC if it matters.

usually if the invite says Black Tie (Not Black Tie optional) the guys are in tuxes and the ladies in Floor length gowns.

I've only ever been to one black tie wedding and I was one of the FEW in a floor length gown.

If it says black tie, the men should be in tuxes, but attire for women is way liberal these days. You could do long if you wanted, but don't feel forced to. Most of the time women will be in formal short dresses. The dress doesn't have to be black- any color you want (minus white obviously).

I go to black tie events a few times a year and I can tell you MANY women wear short dresses. Go with what's comfortable for you.
ETA- I can't comment on if NYC is different than LI (mine are usually on LI). Men wear tux's.

DH and I tend to be traditional and wear a long gown (me  ) and a tux (him ). However, at our friends' wedding last year, I was one of the few of our friends who wore a gown. I adore that dress, but have had no opportunity to wear it again.
