black and blue toenail

so i'm loading the dishwasher, and I dont what ds did. but I hear him whaling up a storm. (DH is still at work so its just me and DS)
i go look and his big toe is black and blue under the nail, and a lil scrape under it... i look around there is nothing there that he could've done that with. (only thing i can think of is from the sofa but how?)
so i get some ice, clean up the wound hoping it will calm him down.
i then go attempt to put on a bandaid. and hes crying even louder, more blood.
I call the ped. just to be on the safe side.
he tells me all with be fine, keep using ice, some neosporin and bring him in tomorrow for a look.
i feel soooo horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible now
did this ever happen to anyone else's DC, any tips advice on how to make it better?

Don't feel badly - kids are kids - that's what they do.

Keep an eye on it & bring him to the doc tomorrow.
