Bird's Nest .. HELP

How do you discourage birds from making nests near your house (i.e. porch, eaves, etc....) I don't want to posion them but I have finches, cardinals, Blue Jays and Black Birds (crows?) all trying to build nests very near the house.

I'm at a loss ....

Re: Bird's Nest .. HELP

Why do you want to get rid of them? I am lost.

Re: Bird's Nest .. HELP

I want to get rid of them because they are on the eaves of my back porch where we sit and play. Last year we had baby finches over our head with a mommy & daddy flying in and around us trying to scare us to protect/feed their babies. Twobabies also died when they fell out of their nests and hit the cement patio below. I had the pleasure of cleaning them up after my son touched one .Chat Icon
I'd like to avoid that this year ....

I don't mind a nest in the backyard in a tree - I just don't want them on or too close to my house. Birds carry mites that are very destructive if they get inside the house.

Re: Bird's Nest .. HELP

Can you put up some kind of metal netting or spikes in those areas?

This sounds like a good idea. Or go into a garden store/Lowe's garden dept. & ask what they suggest. The people that work at the one near us always seem to have the right answers. Chat Icon Good luck!! What about putting an inexpensive birdhouse for them somewhere else & attract them there with a feeder?

Re: Bird's Nest .. HELP

We had birds in our attic, we had to take the attic vent and re-attached very small squared metal mesh so they couldn't break the vent and get in.

We also had them lifting the flap of our dryer vent. DH had to clean out the vent and hose (inside out house), remove a nest and 2 eggs, and then re-attach a new dryer vent cover. This one also has small square holes so the birds can't get through.
