BioPhysical Profile - what it is and what it entails...
just an FYI really, since i know docs like to throw test afer test at us without explanation:
i had one done today at 37 weeks, 1 day.
they put you on a sono machine to check that the baby is: a. breathing b. moving well c. to check fluid levels
it can be 5 minutes (if the baby is active and Miss. Emma WAS) or it can take up to a half hour to get this 'going'. There are NO measurements done at this sono (i asked).
100% painless (an EXTERNAL sono) and they MAY or MAY NOT show you what's going on.
I was chatting endlessly with the sono tech (LOVE that guy) and he showed me her breathing....that was fun to see!

Just wanted to add they also look at the baby's muscle tone. That is the 4th part of the test and you get up to 2 points for each part to give you a total of 8 points. It is usually used in conjunction with a Fetal non stress test and there you are also given another max of 2 points to bring your total maximum score to 10/10.
