Big green lies

Interesting show (Fine Living Network - Fios #166). They investigate the "green" things that are worth it and the ones that are lies.

They had two people shop for red meat, spinach, and potatoes. One went organic, the other didn't. They did a 'blind' taste test and unanimously agreed that the organic tasted better. Only thing is... It was almost double the grocery bill! $36. to $66.

They said that certain fruits and veggies are better to buy organic. Which ones? The ones with thin skins - cucumber, peppers, apples, mangos, etc. Things like oranges have a thicker skin so you're ingesting less chemicals and insecticides.

Re: Big green lies

They just did an experiment and said that using AC in your car decreases your fuel efficiency about 4% - 1 mile per gallon versus driving with your windows down.

That's an interesting one for me because I had heard that having the windows open drags on the car and is worse, since you don't have aerodynamics anymore.

I've seen and read about this comparison several dozen times, by many different people/organizations. With a dozen tests, I've seen 13 different answers. I think a lot of it depends on the outside temp, average speed, AC efficiency, size of the engine, shape of the car, 4 door vs 2 door, etc, etc.

Actually, when the temp is just slightly too warm, I'll keep the windows closed, and cool off the car with the AC, then turn it off for a while. The car is fairly well insulated, so I can stay comfortable for a while that way. It's more efficient than constantly keeping the AC going, or keeping the windows open the whole trip.... If it's humid and muggy, I'm using the AC.... I don't care how much air is blowing on me, if it's 100% humidity, and 90+ degrees, an open window just blows hot humid air at you....

Re: Big green lies

I'm definitely going to add this show to my DVR list. I watch a lot of green shows already, and it's nice to see "green" things exposed for how "green" they really are.

Re: Big green lies

I could see where a lot of factors come into play with that kind of experiment.

I would really like to see them test so-called green products like Green Works and say how they stack up to something like Seventh Generation.

I don't buy organix foods/keep an organic garden for the taste but rather to limit the chemicals and insecticides going into me.

Def plan on watching this show! I too am interested in how one green product compares to another.
