Big cars

When I was a kid, my family always had a sedan. Two parents, two cars, big family sedan, no problems. My DH's family was the same, but they had three kids and hockey equipment - all in a sedan. Now it seems like every couple who has kids feels like they NEED to have an SUV, like there's no way to comfortably fit 2 tiny baby kids, or even 2 grown children or adults) in the back of a sedan.

That being said, I don't have kids, so maybe it's just that I don't understand all the cr@p that needs to be lugged around or something. But seriously, how are cars that were perfectly fine when we were kids not nearly big enough for families these days?

Re: Big cars

Car seats.... big factor there. Growing up, we just piled all the kids (and the neighbor's kids) in the car, and drove off. Now, everyone is in a car seat, only 2 per row, so 3 kids = SUV or minivan.

I don't think the cars are as large anymore.

Re: Big cars

My family always had a sedan also.
I think the rise is due to a few things - good marketing being one and the other is safety. People see SUVs on the road and say "If my sedan got hit by one of those, then who would win?" So they get out and get an SUV so they can feel safer.
I think the storage is great too. We have a wagon now, and its just me and DH and I love all the things we can fit in there. If I wasn't so concerned about the inefficiency of SUVs in gas mileage, I would get one.

Re: Big cars

Cars back then were much larger...and kids weren't put in carseats - we were just thrown in there or put in boxes Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hate how the surge of SUVs has perpetuated this idea that they're safer...when they aren't. They're just bigger.

My family always had a station wagon and a sedan. We were not put in car seats - they werent' law back then. My mother's Buick Estate wagon was bigger than most average sized SUVs but had a lower chassis.

It was this exact model (1972) and color

ETA: My family had 4 kids and the car still had room left over when the 6 of us went out together.

I remember riding in the back of my friend's station wagon - I thought it was the best thing ever.
Can you imagine if someone let their kids do that today?

Re: Big cars

We had a full-size station wagon with the extra row in the way back growing up so big cars are all I've ever known.

Some of the perks to owning a large SUV...

When we go to Home Depot or any store for that matter, we don't pay to have anything delivered, we just take it home right then and there.

When we go away camping our stuff fits easily in our SUV.

When I'm driving upstate in the mud and whatnot, there's no concern about getting stuck.

When (one day) we have a boat, we'll always have something to tow it with.

When I'm driving my kids around and they ask if we can pick up their friends I'll be able to say no problem, there's pleanty of room.

Re: Big cars

I could never have a car now it wouldn't be realistic. I have 3kids and a step dtr on the weekend therefore I couldn't even fit them all in the car at the same time, especially because 2 of my boys are in car seats. Even if my step dtr wasn't with us a car would still be too small between all my sons equipment (hockey, soccer, basketball) and some toys for the little one to play with while at the field and also my double stroller. I sometimes car pool also with a car I wouldn't have room to put anyone else in my car. I love my truck and the only way we would have a car is if it was our 2nd car therefore who ever didn't have the children would have to drive that.

this sums it up for me- minus the camping- insert snowboarding

my family always had a huge station wagon and we were allowed to sit in the "way back" the truck with no seat belts- that would NEVER fly today

and I have to say my family was one of the first to have an SUV- and if you saw my driveway back then (the new people regraded it- so I can't even tell you to drive by) you would understand why my Mother felt the need for 4 wheel drive (it basically went straight down)

The cars back then were SO much bigger! Every car was like a boat. You could easily fit three people in the front seat and four in the back. There was nothing dividing the driver and the passenger seating.

I agree about the car seats. Kids (who weren't babies) didn't need them. The car seats were much smaller then too.

Also kids "gear" was much different back then. Strollers were much different back then. There were no travel systems and certainly no double strollers. Once a kid was able to walk, they would.

Also the inside of cars are smaller now. My sister has an Nissan Murano, but with 2 kids and their car seats, no one else can fit in the back seat.

ITA. We never needed all the room for the carseats/boosters/convertible seats like we do now, and then to add other people besides yourself & your kids....fugghettaboutit.

my best friends mom had one - it was a 1984 Chevy Station Wagon and it only died about thre years ago. We called it the "back back". We would always fight on who got to sit back there, so we could wave to people and hold up signs.
