Bfing moms come in

My DD is two weeks old. The bfing is going great, but she is def eating more often (1.5-2 hours) sometimes every 3 if I am lucky. My questions are do any of your babies ever seem hungry a few minutes after they eat? If so what do you do? Also, when will they start to sleep longer at night or do you have a suggestion on how to get them to go down for a longer period of time at night? Thanks

Believe it or not drink ovaltine. The malt in it thinkens your BM and that will help strech the feedings out from 1-2 hours to 2-3.

If she seems hungry, nurse her again. Your body will be stimulated to make more milk.

Very tight swaddling helped my daughter sleep longer at night. I started getting a longer stretch at about 6 weeks.

It is very common for Breast Fed babies to eat that frequently, especially that young. DD is 4 months and although there really is no such thing as "schedule" with nursing, she tends to eat about every 2 -3 hours. As far as sleeping longer, DD started getting better around 3 months. Re: Bfing moms come in

Sometimes after DD burps, she goes back in for more. I just follow her cues and dont pay any attention to the time. Sometimes she'll eat for 5-10 min, sometimes for 30 min. She still eats every 1-2, sometimes 2-3 hours and Gianna has been sleeping through the night, 10:30 to 6-8am, since 4th of july weekend.

Honestly, I am very lucky, I didn't do anything to "make" her sleep later. I just fed her when she was hungry and she did the rest herself. We do things differently at night(bedtime and after), like we dim lights, if we talk to her at all is in soft, whispery tones, and we try not to go to her at the first whimpery cry. we don't let her cio, cause she's too young, but we don't jump up at the 1st cry.

good luck! it will get better tooChat Icon Chat Icon

I tried to keep her eating for 30-45 minutes per feeding. sometimes she would fall asleep so I would change her diaper and burp her. Then keep going. Based on what I read, I don't think babies need to eat every hour. They should stretch out 2 hours at minimum.

Re: Bfing moms come in

I BF my son. In the beginning there were times where he ate every hour and it was completely normal. He grew almost a pound in one week! My pediatrician said to just nurse him whenever I thought he was hungry, and to never go by the clock. She told me they grow so much in the beginning that sometimes they eat a lot, esp when they are breastfed because its digested so quickly. He is four months now and still nurses about every two hours during the day.

Re: Bfing moms come in

My DS is six weeks old. I just feed him again. I was concerned at first that he was eating too much, but as I have done more reading, his behavior is very normal. During growth spurts at 2-3 weeks and at 6 weeks, they eat more often to build up your milk supply.
As for sleeping, at night he will get one 4 hour stretch, then wake up every 2-3 hours.

at that age, ds was often eating every hour. they sometimes need to eat a lot at that age. i would just feed ds whenever i thought he was hungry. if she seems hungry after eating, i would just try to put her back on. if you're only using 1 side per feeding, try putting her on the other side and she if she will take more. as for the sleeping, ds was still waking up at least every 3 hours until about 2 months. then on his own he started stretching out the time between feedings and by 3 months he started sleeping through the night. the only thing i can suggest to help her sleep longer at night is to make sure she doesn't sleep too long during the day--i wouldn't let her sleep for more than 3 hours at a time--and to feed her a lot during the day so hopefully she won't need to eat so much during the night. oh, and when you get up with her at night, keep noise, lights, talking, etc to a minimum. just feed her and try to get her back to sleep.
