BF/Pumping Question
DS is 3 months old (I can't believe it!), and at daycare during the week. I pump at work, and can barely keep up. My question is, they say he is finishing his bottles, I leave 3 slightly over 6 oz bottles... and I asked when they say "all" if they really mean the whole thing or if he's leaving anything, they said when they write "all" that means he's finishing the whole thing. He also eats every 2-3 hours once he's home, sometimes even every 1.5 hours before bed (BF). He was 11lbs 2 oz at his appointment 2 weeks ago, and I'm trying to decide if I should be leaving him more with his bottles at daycare. He eats every 3 hours, never goes more than that, sometimes is hungry before that. Should I be giving 3 - 7oz bottles if he's finishing them? Or should I start giving a 4th smaller bottle? I don't want to over-feed him, but I also don't want him to be hungry. So confusing when I'm not there!

does daycare tell you he is still hungry? just bc he is finishing his bottle, doesnt necessarily mean he needs more. if they say he is getting hungry around 2 hours instead of three, i would increase one bottle an ounce and see how it goes. if its specifically for one feed that he gets hungry before the 3 hours, i would just increase the bottle before the hungry time. adding 3 ounces in one day is a lot for a little tummy to handle...and you wouldnt want to waste the milk

That's what I was nervous about! I'll keep an eye on his "infant grams" and see how the pattern goes. it might just be the first bottle when he first gets in.

At 4 months old, DS was drinking 16 ounces over the course of 9 hours at daycare. I would literally nurse him right before daycare at 6:15 and right when I picked him up at 4. What I did was I left 3 4 ounce bottles and 2 2 ounce bottles. I let them choose how to give it to him. If he was still hungry after 4 ounces then they'd give him a 2 ounce bottle. I also left about 12 ounces of emergency frozen milk.
To increase my supply, I would pump after DS' morning nursing session on the weekends. It sucked, but it definitely helped to increase my supply.

imo , theyre overfeeding him (which is why you cant keep up with the pump). i'd recommend they give smaller bottles more frequently throughout the day.

I would lessen the amount of time between feeds and also lower the ounces per feeding. Breast fed babies cant go the 4 hours like formula fed. At that age my DD was taking 4oz every 2 hours. I was sending her to day care with 20oz per day and she got roughly 4 bottle while there and 99% of the time had a 4oz pouch left over.

This. Are they pace feeding him? I think the norm is 1-2 oz for every hour that you're away from him. I'd google pace feeding breast fed babies and see if this might be helpful.

I agree, I'd do 3oz bottles more frequently. See if that helps, it might reduce the amount you need by 3 oz if he doesn't take that last bottle.

I'll try this. Right now he eats 6oz every 3 hours (NOT 4, as another poster thought, just clarifying).
I know my ds is NOT being over fed - he's just a hungry baby. He's eaten well since day 4, and when he's home with me, he goes 3 hours, and usually needs both breasts. Except in the late evening when he could eat every 2 hours. He has cleaned 6oz bottles for a while (because my grandma has been in the Hospital he has needed bottles.

That's the amount he's being given (9 hours away from me, 18 oz). I think my biggest problem is that I don't make sure I pump 3 times at work.... I'm going to see how this week goes and if he's still hungry after the bottles and then try the smaller bottles more often thing.

Instead of increasing the amount of times you pump, just try to pump longer. At that point I was pumping a half hour per session and drinking tons of water. I had enough milk to supply twins! I usually pumped once in the am, twice at work and once when I got home and right before bed. I pumped in the middle of the night until the baby was around 12 weeks....the baby was sleeping through the night around 5 weeks but I wanted my milk fully established before I went back to work. I exclusively pumped almost 15 months.

I agree. Both of my kids ate 4 oz bottles every 3 hours at that age. They never drank more than 6 or 6.5 oz bottles.
If you are having trouble keeping up, add in an extra pumping session at night and pump at least once per day 9n the weekend preferably in the morning when your supply is best.

If I give him only 4oz, he's starving after, so I know the 6oz is good... and I asked the "teacher" today, he's not hungry after, he seems satisfied, so I'm going to stick with the 6oz bottles for now. I think my biggest issue is that he's having 3 bottles while away from me and I often have a hard time pumping 3 times... which would make sense if that's what he's eating. It's not because I couldn't get anything out, it's more that I don't have the time at work... or I should say I don't MAKE the time at work. I have to be more diligent about that. Thanks for all the suggestions, I am definitely keeping an eye on it and if things change, I really liked the idea someone gave of giving more smaller bottles and putting less time between the bottles. Thanks again! This transition has been difficult in ways I wasn't expecting.

Are they doing paced bottle feeding? He's 3 months, right? Honestly, its quite a lot and that's the reason you cant keep up at the pump. Im not sure if you know Kellymom's suggestion is 1-1.25oz per hour you're separated from the baby. It may not seem a lot but if youre pacing the feeds and giving smaller amounts more frequently it would probably work better for you at the pump and for your baby. Maybe you could gradually transition the way they feed him to incorporate that.
Not sure what your long term goal is but personally, my supply took dips as my twins got older and it got more and more difficult to pump. But I made it to 14 months (and we're still nursing at 26 months) Luckily I never increased their bottles and things got SO much easier once i introduced solids at 6 months. but hang in there, it's not an easy task!
