BF and early morning waking

DS is 3 months and is a pretty good sleeper.
On a typical day, he takes a 3hr nap, a 2hr nap, and a 30min snooze. He is down for bed by 8:30, sometimes doesn't fall asleep until 9.
Sometimes he sleeps until 5am, which is great, but some days it is 3:30 or 4. He's a long nurser- 30-40 minutes. Rarely, he falls asleep, but more often, he is up and ready to play after. Today he was up from 4:15-6:15 and my 3yr old was up at 7. Ugh.

Any advice on getting him to go back down more quickly? I keep it quiet and dark- I change him and nurse with a booklight. lol. Is there anything else I can do? TIA!

do you have to change him when he wakes up around 330-4? maybe you can nurse him right away and maybe he can fall back asleep

With DD, I don't change her unless I want her to be up for the day. She doesn't get diaper rash and it's only wet in the am so I don't worry. I also don't turn on any lights at all.

What about only offering one side if he wakes? I remember my LC telling me not to worry about giving both sides at night. Worth a try maybe.

I actually do only nurse from one side. (I was having issues and had to shut one side down at week 4.)

I don't change DD...she gets fed and right back to bed. Sometimes she lays awake for a bit but she always sizes off. It may take a few tries and a little crying but def put him right back down - good luck!

I never changed unless I smelled poop...and I nursed in bed and transferred back to crib or bassinet when she fell back to sleep...it was often instantaniously!

I agree with the crowd - no need to change his diaper (if just wet) and avoid all stimuli if possible (no light, no talking, etc). When he's done, just put him back into his crib (or wherever he sleeps) and hope for the best.

Well, I tried no changing and no lights when he woke at 4am. He seemed to nurse even longer than usual- but prob because he was half asleep. I was able to transfer him back to bed at 5 and get another two hours of sleep. Thanks all!
