BF and biting / pls help

My 10 mo DS started biting me while he nurses, he has done it few times already, sometimes there is some blood, more like bloody sore nipple. but he just bit me so hard that I thought he bit my nipple off, I have an open wound now and it's bleeding a lot . I cleaned it with alcohol wipe and put a breast pad in my bra. Not sure what to do now, do I keep nursing him on this side anyway ? (Meaning later today) or just pump the sore side and let him nurse on the other side? I think I'm traumatized, so afraid to nurse him now. I'm in so much pain. I can't believe he bit me so hard Chat Icon

OUCH!!! Dd never bit me THAT hard that she broke skin, but she did leave teeth marks a few times. I read in The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding that as soon as they bite, remove them from the breast, and place them down and turn your back to them for awhile. It's so they get the point that biting will get them no boob/attention. I also shrieked so loud that DDwas terrified and I think that got the point across too.

I found that DD would clamp down when she was starting to dose off, or if I was empty and needed to switch sides...so I was able to anticipate when it was coming and stop in advance. I would say that she went through a small phase around a year, and then it passed (she still nurses at night now (she's 2) and hasn't bit down in a very long time). I think in some ways it was connected to teething, too.

Good luck!
