Better alternative
DH and I have not had a real vacation in almost 7 years, and honestly it's starting to really get to me. thing is we don't want to use a lot of my vacation time, and DH does not have any paid vacation time. Money is tight right now since we want to really save as much as we can. We have agreed to an extended weekend. Here are the options we have come up with:
Option 1) We go to CT and stay at a Holiday Inn by Mohegan Sun. There seems like there are a lot of relaxing things to do. The hotel is $129 per night for the weekend we were looking at, but I am unsure how much an evening at mohegan sun can run (besides the gambling...thinking shows and stuff).
Option 2) We go to Newport RI, which is slightly more expensive, but I honestly wish we could do that in the spring/summer instead so we can enjoy more outdoor stuff (i.e. fishing)
Option 3) Stay home, disconnect the phone, and enjoy local things (i.e. spa at East Wind, wineries, go out to the hamptons, etc). The plus side is that we get to sleep in our own tempurpedic bed and the dog will not have to be boarded, however, as stated above, we have not gone away in a while and I feel like I am almost cheating myself.
I really don't have much issue with any choices. DH is Mr. Yes-man (will do what I want), so he is no help...he actually liked option 3 the best I think...he came up with it.
The problem is the timing. I don't have freedom to wait for the summer since one of my co-workers will be on ML and I will not be able to take vacation while she is out. DH and I also agreed, regardless of how cheap or how much of a deal it may be, we don't want to be bothered with airfare. If we can not drive to it within a couple of hours, then it's not happening.
What do you all think? I'm open to other ideas as long as they are not too expensive since we are trying to save money.

Re: Better alternative
What about a pet-friendly place like New Hope, PA? It's fairly inexpensive, there are a few things to do and you can bring the pup so you don't have to board it.

I'm not familiar with the area. What kind of things are there to do? How long a drive is it? Sorry so many questions...I don't travel much.

Re: Better alternative
I would say you should try Mohegan sun It seems reasonable.
That has got to be rough 7 years with no vacation, taking a long weekend will do you a lot of good!!!!
I agree with CT you would enjoy it more if it was warm. Something like Mohegan sun you can go all year long, and its a short drive.

Re: Better alternative
I suggest a nice hotel in Vermont. It is about a 4- 4 1/2 hour drive. It is so pretty in Vermont.
What about the Pocono's. That is not a long drive, and there are plenty of romantic places to stay.
I think you mean Newport Rhode Island not CT. If it is Newport RI, I really like this place, but it is better in the summer. I don't think many things will be open this time of the year.
I wouldn't stay home, that is no fun!!

It's about 2.5 hours from LI. They have a few galleries, lots of shops, it's right on the Delaware River...there's a steam train tour through the area and mule tours of the old barge system. The mule tour may not be running yet. It's very, very pretty - quaint is a better word. There are quite a few excellent restaurants for dinner and some great bars for nightlife.

What about mystic CT? We are going and looked at some great places to stay. Lots of posts on here about it.
Or The Poconos? PLenty to do and stay there .
Lake George? Virginia Beach?
I also second New Hope PA. Its nice there. Theres a lot to do..and you can go to Philly too, its not far ( about 45 min'S) ( do the zoo or something) .
Or stay at a hotel in Montauk? Or NYC?

Re: Better alternative
To be honest, Unless you are going to Mohegan Sun to see a show--imo there is only so much u can do besides the gambling.
Staying home might be ok but we always have the best of intnetion to just relax and it never happens!!
Why dont you go to the Poconos? It is a really short dirve, it is not super expensive. The Caesers resorts are really fun, good food, cute rooms, kinda cheesy and lovey dovey but u can see shows, eat alot, hike, depending what season u go in indoor an doutdoor pools. IMO that is where I would go
ETA: You desereve a vacation, enjoy it!!!!
