Best Place for Haircut - 18 months

My son turned 18 months today and it is finally time for his first haircut. He's on the shy side and is absolutely TERRIFIED when we go to the dr's office. I mean cries hysterically in the waiting room. So I need a very kid friendly place that will also allow me to put him on my lap for the cut. I am certain he will not go in any kind of chair.

I am located in the Stony Brook/East Setauket area. Thanks!!

We just took my D to my DH's barber.

They were great. Let my DS sit on my DH's lap. We actually had him watch daddy get his hair cut first. We go to a place in Lindnhurst so its a bit far from you but I would try a reg barber.

I live in Holbrook. DS was just over 2 when he got his first haircut, but has limited vocabulary and other issues. We just took him to the local barber for a haircut and he did just fine.

We go to Kids Kuts at the Harbor. It's in the mini-mall in Port Jefferson. They are only open Thursday-Saturday, they charge $15/hair cut. The kid can sit on a horse or a car or in parents lap on a regular salon chair.

Plus, the salon has tons of toys, TV, etc to distract your little one.

For first hair cut, they give you a certificate and they bag the hair to give you.

ETA: Address/Phone
134 Main St, Port Jefferson, NY 11777
(631) 476-8323

Hours: Thurs - Sat: 11am - 5pm; Closed Sun - Wed.

Best Place for Haircut - 18 months

I am 100% certain that my son would not do well at a regular barber and so that's why I'm asking specifically for kid places. He does not have any issues, but he does frighten easily. I need a place that will be patient and prepared, and not shocked, if my son has a meltdown lol because I am pretty much expecting it.

ETA: For example, my in-laws came in from Boston this past weekend. He sees them in person once every month or two and he skypes with them at least once per week. When my FIL walked in, DS stopped in his tracks and started weeping. He was very frightened. But by the end of the evening he was walking around the house looking for him, saying "Pop Pop?" He warms up but it takes some time. He is not a fan of strangers though.

Thank you so much for all the info!! I know exactly where the mini-mall is and it's super close to my home. Thanks again!

I think you'd be surprised. A reg barber will not be shocked if there is a meltdown...it happens everyday. IMO the barbers can sometimes be better with the kids. I have seen some horrible experiences at the kids places.

I'm sure there can be bad experiences at both so that's why I'm looking for a reputable kids' place with good reviews. Chat Icon

I highly recommend Kid's Cut in Centereach. We take DS to Joanne, the owner. THey have a cute playroom in the back for before/after-cut distraction and each station has toys and DVD players to help distract. All of the stylists are very patient and have LOTS of experience dealing with kids who do not want to be there. DS used to cry through his haircuts and now at 3, he sits almost perfectly still for her. He does still sit on my lap, which is not a problem at all. Good luck!

Thank you very much for the referral!! A friend of mine took her son here and really liked it. Coincidentally, I had my first haircut there as a baby!
