Benadryl question...
I plan on discussing with ped when we go for Ryan's well visit next week, but thought I'd ask here first.
We will be traveling with Ryan late January to Florida. I have heard of giving Benadryl for the flight.
Anyone done this? Would you recommend it? Someone told me if I am going to do it to "test" it out with Ryan first because he could have an adverse reaction! When would be a good time to try it out?

Re: Benadryl question...
I don't know, I never gave Landon benedryl. But I have travelled with him a few times and never heard of that. What is it supposed to do?

Re: Benadryl question...
I asked my ped if I could give my son benadryl when flying to Italy to take the edge off - he was 13 months at the time....he said no.
I did give him some tylenol because he had teeth coming in also - so I think that mellowed him out a little bit.
How old is your son?

Re: Benadryl question...
To make him sleepy? I wouldn't do it b/c it can have the opposite effect as well.
We have flown with DS 3x (3 months, 8 months and 15 months) and he really has been fine each time. I think Ryan will be closer to the 8 month age and we just gave him a bottle or a pacifer on take off and landing and he was fine. He slept on my sister for most of that flight actually!

Re: Benadryl question...
I am not a fun of drugging kids to get them to sleep on the airplane. Even after my own kid cried for 3 hours straight on the way to WDW. I think they can have an adverse affect at anytime though, regardless if you tested it prior to. Obviously I'm not much help, sorry

Re: Benadryl question...
I see that Kate said he'll be 8 months -- I def. don't think it's necessary IMO. Give him a bottle and he'll be fine! We've flown with Jack a ton of times and never had a problem.
Also - not sure if your son watches any TV but the portable DVD player is a HUGE HUGE help! It just kills time which is a plus!

Yea - That is def. too young for Benadryl I think. Your ped may say differently but I wouldn't feel comfortable! If you do give it to him make sure you test it out another time - before getting on the plane - in case he has a reaction to it you don't want to be in the air!
Does he take a pacifier? Will you BF him on the plane? They say the sucking helps them with their ears popping!

I'll talk to the Ped. But after thinking about it, I think you are right. He is too young.
I have no problem BFing on the plane. So I can make sure to nurse him on the take off and landing.
No paci's here. I always tried to get him into it, but he never did.

Re: Benadryl question...
on a flight at 8 mos old, I boarded thinking it was so wrong to drug your child.
an hour into the air, I would have paid any amount of money to get something into his system.
I think he's too young for benedryl, but I would give tylenol or something.
I have given benedryl, but he was over a year old. He had a bad bug bite and ped told me how much to give him. Then I figured it could not hurt on flight.

Re: Benadryl question...
I BF on plane. AT one point, DH pointed out 6 people who had seen my nipple. He says for sure I am on youtube somewhere.
Josh could not concentrate on nursing...so my boob was out the whole time trying to nurse this monster to sleep.

Oh boy. Well, wouldn't be the first time Ryan has forced me into nudity in a public place

Re: Benadryl question...
First of all, while not ideal, 8 months is not too young for Benedryl. DD just got over a bad allergic reaction to immoxycillin and the Ped prescribed Benedryl to relieve poor DD's agony from itching.
That being said, at that age, I would only give it to a baby if necessary and on doctor's orders.
Also, the Benedryl had an opposite effect on DD - she was wired from it - not sleepy at all (which made for a very long night). The second night, however, it made her sleepy.
Good luck!

Re: Benadryl question...
we did it with DD when we went to mexico She slept the whole entire flight, I don't even think we gave her the full dosage, she was 9 months at the time. She had no side effects, woke up perfectly happy, when the flight was over, the people behind us coudln't even believe we had a baby with us.

Re: Benadryl question...
I wouldn't recommend it unless you know for sure how he's going to react.
Benadryl makes some kids (like Maddie) more hyper.

Not true I have been giving Jaidy Benadryl since she was about 5 months.
BUT it is when she has an allergic reaction. It really doesn't make her sleepy at all. I would try an opt for other measures.

No one said it was too young for Benedryl, I think people were saying it was too young for it for flying

I don't mean her child is too young for Benadryl - if he's sick or prescribed by a doctor - I think he's too young to give it for no reason when getting on a plane!

Re: Benadryl question...
We flew with DS to Florida when he was 6 months old, and all we did was give him a bottle on take-off and landing (no benadryl). He didn't really want the bottle during landing on the way home. DS enjoyed the flight quite a bit and spent most of his time flirting with flight attendants
