Benadryl or Claritin...

DD has a runny nose and is coughing A LOT when she tries to sleep. She coughed so much that she vomited last night because of it.

The thing is...is that she mostly only coughs while laying down. When she is walking around its hardly ever, which makes believe the reason she is coughing is because of the drip from nose into her throat. I feel as though she needs something to dry her up. She is 2 years old. Which med. do you recommend and does it actually help the runny nose????

I'm assuming the reason is because neither med has been approved for use in children that young. We've used Benadryl however, only in emergency circumstances (when DD eats something with dairy in it).

I agree with Amy. Unless prescribed, no OTC medicines are recommended in kids under 5.

I didn't even know Claritan made a kid formula at all

Re: Benadryl or Claritin...

I had already given Claritin to her before because I have Children's Claritin in the house already. I just dont know which was better.

Its says for children 2 and up.

Oh and my ped. must have recommended it becuase I just dont give my DD any kind of medicine.

A lot of medicines say 2 and up, but the FDA does not recommend until 5. And this is fairly new as well.

I don't think anyone was really telling you not to give it, just why maybe people didn't have experience with the medsChat Icon
