Being induced at 39 weeks? I don't know how I feel about this.

I'm due on April 13th and currently am dilated 5cm, 80% effaced. I lost my mucus plug over a week ago and during the internals, the Dr can feel the bag of water and the baby's headChat Icon

This has been going on (dilation, contractions, etc) since March 6th and I was put on bed rest 2 weeks ago (when I was 5cm) in hopes that staying off my feet would keep this little guy cooking as long as possible. Well it worked and we made it to April!Chat Icon

At my Dr appt on Tuesday, he scheduled an induction for me for next Thurs 4/8. At first I was excited since that is a definitive end in sight, but now I don't know how I feel about it. He thinks I'll go on my own by just resumming normal activities and this is just a back-up plan. But I guess I just feel like I've come this far, why be induced at 39 weeks, why don't we wait until I'm past my DD? I just left him a message to discuss it more.

Is being induced at 39 weeks normal? What are your feelings on it?

Re: Being induced at 39 weeks? I don't know how I feel about this.

I was induced with DD at 39 weeks due to having Gestational Diabietes.

Unlike you however, I was NOT dialated, effaced, etc..... and I had a very QUICK and easy delivery.

Sounds like you might not even make it to that date (which is a great day to be born anyway... I was born on 4/8! Chat Icon )

I had no issue with going a week early. I was very happy to not be walking around wondering when I would go into labor.

It seems a bit odd, is there any reason why you need to go before 40 weeks? Has he said anything about stripping your membranes or other things? When my OB stripped my membranes I went into labor that night! But I was almost 40 weeks and had GD so they wouldn't let me go past my due date.

He mentioned that since I lost my mucus plug a while ago that there was a risk (albeit slight) of infection since there is nothing protecting the baby from being exposed to bacteria.
Don't most women lose their plug and not go into labor right away though?Chat Icon Doesn't seem like reason enough for me....

Ahhhh I was wondering if that was why. Alot of women lose their plug little by little- I didn't even notice it with my first pregnancy so who knows when it was gone! We are considered full term at 37 weeks so by 39 weeks you and the baby should be OK. My OB just called and scheduled my C section for 39 weeks on the nose, so I guess that timing is somewhat common, but I can understand why you would rather go into labor on your own!

I was just going to post this, perhaps he doesn't want the risk of infection to become greater. I bet you go before your due date though.Chat Icon

They might not even have to induce you, if they hook you up to IV and break your water, you might go right into labor!

thanks, it's comforting to know that the timing of it being 39 weeks is not all that uncommon.

I was induced at 39 weeks because my son measured big on the growth sono. I had no problems with induction and it worked out fine! I hope your baby arrives soon Chat Icon

Re: Being induced at 39 weeks? I don't know how I feel about this.

I was induced in my 40th week (39w4d and 39w3d)with both my DDs purely for convenience (I live an hour away from the hospital and both our families live OOS). I was dilated beyond 2 cm with both and over 50% effaced.

Both inductions went fine- and I'll do it again if I'm again showing progress.

Since you are that much dilated and effaced, chances are you'll go pretty quickly with or without induction.

The comment about the mucous plug is weird...they can regenerate, and many women go quite a few days or even weeks without labor after losing their plugs. Chat Icon

That being said, at 5cm and 80% effaced you would be a great candidate for induction.

Re: Being induced at 39 weeks? I don't know how I feel about this.

I think he wants to induce b/c of the risk of infection but also b/c of your progress. If you go into labor on your own you may go very quickly. He probably wants to be sure you make it to the hospital and have the opportunity for the epidural, if you want one. You're window for that may be very short, give your dilation and effacement currently. I'd keep my hospital bag on me, if I was you! Good luck!

Well hello date twin!
37 weeks is considered full term so there really isn't any risk of the baby being "premature" at 39 weeks. But I understand your concerns about being induced early. Since you lost your plug he just might be concerned about the risk of infection if you go any longer. My doctor is talking induction with me too...so we both might move up on the expecting list!

Re: Being induced at 39 weeks? I don't know how I feel about this.

I was induced at 39 weeks. I was 3 cm and fully effaced. I was having steady contractions though. I had a very easy induction. I got there at 11ish, admitted at 1, and he was born at 8:12 pm so it was quite fast!

Goodluck!!

i don't see any reason what so ever for you to be induced unless the baby's running out of fluid or ur BP is high. if i was u i wouldn't get induced.
