Being around someone with Shingles.....
I just found out that my mother in law who watched my DD who is 3 all day yesterday and me who is 20 weeks pregnant has shingles......I only was around her dropping my DD off and picking her up so nothing longer than 15 mins at a time.......Is this safe??
I have heard alot of stories so I am alittle freaked out.

I looked into it when pregnant with DS because I was exposed as well.
If you had chicken pox, you most likely have immunity and are at low risk of getting it.
If DD has been vaccinated for chicken pox, she should be fine as well.

have you had chicken pox or did you get the varicella shot? If yes, you don't even bother reading the rest.. you are safe 
Exposure is defined if and when you come contact with the leisions, and bodily fluids.. the only reason I know this is because I have no immunity and I had two scares already..

I had chicken pox as a kid but still got shingles. I actually had it in August and was already pregnant. It wasn't fun but it didn't cause any issues w my pregnancy (I just couldn't take any medicine). Once I was diagnosed, I got the chicken pox shot for my boys. If you didnt come in direct contact, u should be fine (but even if u did get it, it's not horrible). Hth!

I actually just asked my OB about this the other day bc i have plans with a friend tomorrow that currently has shingles. He just said not to touch her or the affected areas (which should be covered by dressings anyway) and that i'd be fine. HTH.

I would call my Dr to be on the safe side. I had chicken pox twice and shingles once so you can get it even if you have had chicken pox (apparently I have a dormant virus that flares up when I'm stressed).

Sorry to crash, but you can ONLY get shingles if you've had the chicken pox at some point in your life. If you've had the chicken pox, it leaves something behind in your system that can at some point in your life develop into shingles.
If you have never had chicken pox or have never had the chicken pox vaccine, you have to physically touch the sores or the fluid oozing from the sores of the person infected with shingles to get sick. And if you do, then, you will get chicken pox, not shingles. (You don't get shingles from touching shingles sores).
If you are immune (by having had chicken pox or the cp vaccine), you are fine.
I know because someone in DH's family got shingles when my DS was a newborn (and he was a preemie so he was extra succeptible to infections) and I was on the phone with the ped's office and did crazy research. Also my BFF is a ped and she went over everything with me after all that because I was still nervous haha.

This is true. But this is not...
If you are immune (by having had chicken pox or the cp vaccine), you are fine.
I had chicken pox when I was 2 years old and 30 years old. Having had them once unfortunately does not make you immune.

Who ever has had chicken pox can get shingles, you would have to touch the area where your MiL has it to get it! Same for your DD, I had shingles and my kids and DH never got it, it was in an area where they couldn't touch it anyway! Shingles usually lasts for 2 weeks.

Chicken pox = shingles
Shingles is the re-appearance of the virus (that lays dormant for extended periods of time INSIDE you) that originally caused the chicken pox.
So:
1. YES, you can get chicken pox from shingles.
2. You will not get shingles from someone with shingles.
3. Pregnant women who are non-immune to chicken pox should stay away from those with shingles to prevent having the birth-defects that come from an active chicken pox infection during pregnancy.
4. Having the chicken pox does not necessarily guarantee immunity (reports estimate 5-10% of people with chickenpox already reported having it).
My OB tested me for immunity to Chicken pox virus. I believe it was part of a routine panel: so call & ask!

Just want to agree that you can get shingles only if you have had chix pox.
My dad was in the vaccine trial for shingles and the factors for acceptance into the study was a parent that had shingles, had the chix pox and was over 60.
So far he hasn't gotten shingles (it's been 10+ years since the study), so maybe the vaccine will help us in the future!
