Beehive in the ground?
When I was in the yard today, I came across a spot where 3 or 4 bees seemed to be coming out of the ground. It was in a spot previously covered by leaves. Are there beehives underground? How can I get rid of them? Thx!

Re: Beehive in the ground?
I have them and they are called miner bees. From what I have read, they do not sting and are good for pollination.
They will also just disappear after a bit and be back next season....one of my hives are already gone.
The nest they say is up to 3feet below ground

Re: Beehive in the ground?
They could also be yellow jackets. Yellow jackets nest in the ground. If you get too close to the hole they will start stinging. My dog was sniffing around a hole one day and got stung by about 15 yellow jackets. I didn't even know they nested in the ground but my vet said dogs get attacked by them all the time.

Re: Beehive in the ground?
We had a nest of yellow jackets in the front of our house under a bush. My FIL noticed a lot of bee's on our front walkway and decided to watch them. He said that's how you find where their nest is. He killed the nest for us by spraying bee killer at night (when the bee's are in their hive). I think he did it 2 or 3 nights in a row and then covered up the hole with dirt. We haven't had them back and this was last summer.

Re: Beehive in the ground?
we had a yellow jacket hive under ground (by a tree root) as well. DH found it when he was mowing the lawn! OUCH!
We sprayed at dusk a few times and they have never been back (must be 4-5 years now)

Re: Beehive in the ground?
There are also regular bees that burrow underground, that are not yellow jackets and DO sting!
I've had several underground nests over the years. Some bees, some yellow jackets. Some of them I found by cutting the grass.... apparently they aren't happy having a lawnmower drive right over their nest!

Re: Beehive in the ground?
Yes there can be. My parents had a beehive in the ground in their yard a few years ago. Someone stepped on it accidentally & bees flew out everywhere. It was horrible
