Baptism Issues...
Can you guys help me ???....lol. We live in NC (since Aug). but have lived in NY all of our lives. I want to baptize the baby in NY because A- all of my family and friends are mainly there it would be easier. B- I think I would just feel more comfortable with having her baptized there. Besides, I am sure you have read me complain about being here in NC and want to go back to NY in the worst way. So for now I would rather have it up there.
DH is not Catholic, I am. Do you think they are going to give me a hard time about doing this over the phone mainly?? What exactly do you have to do/provide them with before baptism??
Also, the godmother will be Catholic but not the godfather... is tihs OK???
I just want to know some info. before I start contacting churches.
TIA I appreciate the help!!

We are sort of in the same situation- but we live in NY... each church has different requirements.
I think some churches allow god parents that are Christian (but not Catholic)- My DD's godfather-to-be isn't any religion- never been baptized himself- so they will let him have a ceremonial role, but only DD's godmother- who is catholic- will be in the church records... officially the child only needs one god parent anyway.

Re: Baptism Issues...
you should be fine, depending on your church, every church can be so different with rules.
we attended the "baptism class" with our 1st,and we didnt have to go with # 2 and 3. we WERE asked to attend but with babysitting issues, and they really wanted both parents there, they said no big deal.
only one GOdparent has to be CAtholic in my church.

Re: Baptism Issues...
I think you just need one catholic god parent. If you are roman catholic, and your church gives you a hard time you may consider calling St Thomas in West Hemp. Fr Lisante is excellent and does many interfaith ceremonies. I am sure he will be sensitive to your situation as well. My dh is Jewish and I am Catholic and we use him all the time even though I am not in his parish.
Good luck

Re: Baptism Issues...
We are origionally from NY and live in CT we had our DD baptism in NY. All I had to do was contact the church in NY and set the date. We then took the baptism class here in CT got a signed letter from the church and gave that to the church in NY.
As for Godparents, only one has to be catholic and they will probalby have to take a baptism class as well. I had to do that for my godson and my DD godparents had to as well.

Re: Baptism Issues...
My church require both godparents to be catholic, but i heard others don't. The godparents had to produce a letter from their parish that they were members there as well.
My church also required one or both parents to attend a one hour baptism class prior to the baptism. As long as one parent was Catholic.

Re: Baptism Issues...
We baptised our baby last month on LI (we live in VA). No issues with the church on LI but we were married there, I am not sure if that made a difference. DH is not Catholic but is a baptized Christian.
The Church requires that you have one "official" godparent that is a churchgoing Catholic, you can have one other person (of the opposite gender) that isn't Catholic but technically they will be a Christian Witness. This is pretty standard as far as the different parishes go. Some parishes will require that the godparents provide a letter from their home parish stating that they are registered parishioners and attend mass regularly, our church in LI did not. However, our church down in VA was very strict and had we done it here we would have needed the letters.
You really need to contact the parish where you want to have the baptism to see what their policy is. Then you will need to contact your home parish for info on classes, etc. Some churches will require a letter from your home parish stating that you are registered there and so on. We live in a military area and it is standard practice to baptize your child in your home town so the parish down here is pretty understanding of that fact, actually 3 of the 8 couples in our baptism class in VA were doing it somewhere else.
I did almost all of it over the phone but took the class down here. It can be done but you will definitely need to contact the churches. Good luck!
