Bananas and constipation -- edited with new Q (poop related)

We're on our last day of trying bananas. I know they can be binding, but I didn't think such a small amount would really do it--well it did. Yesterday, DD only went a tiny bit and today, she keeps making faces like she's going, but so far, nothing.

We're either going to do pears or applesauce tomorrow. Is one particularly better at getting things going?

ETA: She finally went--and sorry to be graphic, but they were well-formed turds! Like grown-up poop Chat Icon
Chat Icon I'm used her being on the loose side (she's BF). Is this normal for almost 6 months and a month into solids?

Just so you know, applesauce is also very binding! Pears or prunes will help loosen things up!

BRAT = how to bind up (in case of diarrhea):
B = bananas
R = rice
A = apples (including applesauce)
T = toast

Right, forgot about the brat acronym. Thanks. I'll go with pears.

Actually, the BRAT diet isn't to bind, it's just very gentle for upset tummies.

I always give applesauce, prunes, pears when they are constipated.

BTW- if you're doing rice cereal, THAT is binding. We switched to oatmeal as soon as possible.

Thanks! We're actually not doing any grains yet. We started with veggies earlier this month on our doctor's recommendation and now on to fruits (with veggies for dinner). I'll probably add oatmeal soon though.

bananas are very binding for DS as well, but I still give them in the evening to help bind him up for sleep, so it doesn't ruin his sleep.

He get berries and yogurt in the morning and that like magic makes him poop.

If he doesn't, he gets spinach for lunch. If that doesn't work, he'll get prunes for snack.

usually a hard formed poop is a sign of constipation. Bananas would bind my son up too, so now I only give them mixed with pears or apples. You may want to try to introduce prunes so you can mix a bit in with bananas.

I don't give Bananas to her anymore because of the constipation, I tried mixing it with pears and didn't work. Plus, she doesn't even like bananas...I will try again when shes a little bit older.

LMAO.

Yeah, it starts to look more like "real" poop once you start solids. Totally normal.

Bananas are binding, but there are ways around that. I mix them into cereal with a lot of BM, and it seems to help. If you're making her food, make sure the bananas you're using are very ripe.

eta: Pears are very helpful at getting things moving.

Does your DD still poop every day? Mine only goes once every 2 to 3 days! But she's FF so that is probably the biggest difference.

Yeah, anywhere from 1-3 times a day (and that's down from what it used to--after every feeding). It was a little better this evening after her veggie dinner.

Thanks for all the tips ladies!
