Look for livestock feed stores in your area. Is there an Agway anywhere near you? Try calling a local stable to locate a feed store. And, actually what you are looking for isn't hay, but straw which is yellow, slightly shiney and coarser than hay. Costs less than hay too. You should be able to find it easily as it's commonly used for animal bedding. Good luck!

Re: bales of hay?

You likely want straw, not hay. You could use hay, but it will be more expensive. Depending on the type of hay, too, it may not look like you want it to look.

Try Agway - There is one in Hicksville and one in Port Jeff. Horse quality hay is around $10/bale there, but straw should be cheaper.

ETA - Calling horse stables isn't likely to get you much farther than Agway. Most of the barns order hay in bulk from suppliers who don't sell hay or straw just by the bale. You can get straw by the bale at Agway. If they say they don't have straw, you might go see their hay anyway. Sometimes it's total cr@p and looks just like straw...

Dont know the name of it, but there's a place on Sunrise Highway across from Babylon Town Hall that was selling bales of straw and cornstalks this weekend.
