Baking with Kids
So my DH's little cousin might be staying with us again this weekend. Her grandmother (who she lives with) is in the hospital and not doing well and we'd really love to take her mind off of it. I was thinking of doing a little baking project with her! She's 7 y/o, but I'm not sure what recipes to use. I was thinking of just doing boxed cake mix and baking them in ice cream cones. Then we can decorate them with fun sprinkles and stuff. My other idea was baking cookies ahead of time and doing the same, though the cupcake cones would be easier. lol! But then I thought you guys might have a fun kids recipe to use! I'd love to hear any ideas! TIA!

i like the cupcake cone idea. very cute!
also, if that is dessert...baking/making pizzas are always fun! last time we had my niece (7yo) over we had three little pizza breads (walbaums) and we each made one. it was fun to do and they to try eachothers pizza.

Aww that's a cute idea, too! I think I already have the mini pizza crusts at home, too.

Re: Baking with Kids
if you are looking for something that takes up the most time, i would try basic cookies...something where she can help pour the ingredients and even mix (if you use a spoon instead of a mixer) and roll them into a flat sheet, use cookie cutters so she can make the shapes, bake and then also decorate them.

Re: Baking with Kids
I never heard of cake baked in ice cream cones but it sounds really cute and fun. I think a 7 year old would love being involved in any baking project. I think it would be really fun for her if she could do some sort of hands-on decorating, which is why I would also suggest maybe just plain sugar cookies or something of that sort that she can decorate them as she pleases and maybe also play with the dough.
let us know how it goes- post photos, especially if you end up making those cones.

I just happened across the idea when I was googling "kids baking projects"! I thought it was too cute! I was thinking the sugar cookies would be a lot more fun and labor intensive, too. I might just buy a tub of the pre-made cookie dough though so my kitchen isn't a complete disaster. lol! And I did get a big bag of cookie cutters for Christmas so she can go bananas!
I'll definitely take a ton of photos- you know me! lol!

Re: Baking with Kids
I bake with my nieces all the time, and even do it know with my two-year-old son.
no boxes, no short cuts...it's a learning process too.
we just made chocolate chip cookies (I used ghiradelli chips and their recipe, it's my fav) and we also made chocolate cupcakes (I like the hershey's choco cake recipe on the back of their cocoa, and I also like the choco fudge cake recipe on the back of the Ghiradelli powder can) they also really like to make icing.
my son loves to stir!!! lol. and he knows that flour and sugar go in to stuff. just this morning we made pancakes (from scratch) and he was calling out ingredients to me.
if memory serves, I am pretty sure you are a baker...show them what you do...you don't need to scale it down!
ETA: I am making pizzas tonight with my son. he loves it...rolling out the dough, flouring the surfaces, eating the cheese off as I put it on it's a great way to spend time!

This sounds SO sweet! I love it! Hmmm maybe I will just go for it and do a simple cake recipe for her. I know I have a few recipes handy! Thanks for the input!

Re: Baking with Kids
I got a cool cookbook where you tweak cookie dough into new cookies. I'm not much of a baker and this will allow DS and I to "bake"

Re: Baking with Kids
my sister's kids love making pumpkin pies and cupcakes.
also... on the savory side... what about pizzas? we used to make them with my grandmother, we used to put the toppings on, whatever we wanted on them! she also made extra dough and we used to play with it while she rolled it out and stuff!
