Bad allergies and the itching!!

My almost 4 yr old has such bad allergies. His eyes are red and puffy and his nose is running. Doesn't help he's got some sensory issues so it's really bothering him.

Worst is night. He's on Claritin now. It's working for the day. We've tried Allegra and zurtec and this one works. Problem is he's getting up in the middle of the night with swollen eyes and he's so congested. Also itching like crazy. I use eczema creams, tried the eczema oatmeal bath, benadryl before bed... Nothing seems to work. I feel so bad. He wakes up scratching his neck and head like crazy. He hasn't slept well at all.
Calling the Ped tomorrow and going to have to see an allergist. What can an allergist do to help a 4 yr old with the puffy, red eyes and scratching.

Also want to add I do have allergy eye drops, but not easy to give to him and dosnt always get in his eyes.

Your son sounds like he has the same symptoms as my son!

We do Zyrtec...my ped allergist said that is stronger than Claritin ...but she also gave us singular to take as well...we just stated again but last year it seemed to work! We also give a bath before bed..and change pillow case often and get out of clothes after being outside

How about an allergy proof mattress cover and pillow cover? They keep the dust and dust mites to a minimum. Also, keep the stuffed animals out of the bed (these trap dust and mites) and consider taking any rug out of his room. I second a bath before bed, as allergens can be stuck in your hair and bother you when you sleep. Wash all bedding once a week in hot water to kill the mites and get rid of dust. Also, make sure to keep the room relatively dry, as dust mites like humid environments. Keeping the window closed with air conditioning may also help b/c of the filter. HTH! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like my ds....got so bad we do weekly allergy shots now. Zyrtec at night. Flonase nasal spray, pataday for the eyes. When it gets severe and his eyes are too swollen...then steroids are our only choice..2-3 days of that and we're ok.
Claritin pillow. And when pollen is high, shower them every night or wash the pillowcase

When you see the allergist, I would ask him if he feels it is worth cutting out dairy and gluten from his diet.

I found this article and it makes a lot of sense to me. I know it is hard with kids, but it is really only in the beginning and worth trying.

I would take him to an allergist asap. DS is 3.5 and has really bad allergies as per his allergy testing and he's doing great. He had some allergies last year and I didn't want to take a wait and see approach this year so we saw an allergist in late March/early April. He's on a nasal spray daily and a liquid med as needed, and we have eye drops for itchy eyes (but rarely need these). The nasal spray takes 3-4 weeks to work and we've been on it 5 weeks already which is key bc now is when tree pollen is really bad and grass pollen is starting up.

Hope your DS gets some relief soon.
