Do you have them? Pros cons? We are thinking of getting them this year. Just wondering how everyone likes doing it.

We have them! We have 6 Buff Orpingtons and 2 of another breed I'm not even sure of. All of them are really sweet and love attention. They each have there own personalities. In the winter we get 2-4 eggs a day and now 7-8 a day.

They are so friendly they used to try and follow kiddos in thru the back door! Lol! We put up a "chicken gate" on the deck to keep them on the lawn.

The only negative for us is the poop. I just ordered some wire fencing to section off the yard for them.

How big is your coop? Do you feel like they are pretty low maintenance? How are they in the winter, Do you have heat in the coop? Also, what does it cost to feed them per month?

Yes I actually went to it today. They were very informative, but they didn't talk much about personal experiences so I guess that's what I was hoping for here. Thanks though!

Seems like a lot of people have them now, why is it so popular?

Our coop isn't that big. We have an urban roundtop with 1 run extension. I wish we would have gotten one that we could walk into. It would make cleaning it easier.

They are definitely low maintenance. We just let them out in the morning, check their food and water, give them some worms and they roam the yard all day. They hop back in the cool at sun down and we just go out and lock up.

They are totally fine in the winter. We sought out cold hardy breeds. We generally just shovel an area for them if it snows. One of our chicken does not like the snow and generally stays in. We use a heated water bucket for the winter so their water doesn't freeze. There's no need to heat the coop and honestly it really wouldn't be safe.

We use organic feed so it's a bit more. It runs us about 35/week. Honestly though we have a lot of neighborhood birds eating it so we are trying to tweek our set up. If the other birds weren't eating it a bag would prob last 2-3 weeks.

There's a whole forum for backyard chickens :) I think it's backyardchickens.com. It's very helpful.

My next door neighbor has some, and a friend of mine has some. I don't know any details, but thought I'd add to the list of people who have backyard chickens. Chat Icon

Lol thanks. What happens to their chickens that stop laying eggs? A friend of mine in Florida told me they eat them... I can't do that... so I'm wondering what people do around here

As of a couple years ago I'm pretty sure town of Hempstead is one that you weren't allowed to have them. Chat Icon

I guess it could have changed, but I kinda doubt it
