Re: Baby shower
A girl I work with had on the invitations that they were having a diaper raffle. For every box of diapers and wipes you brought you would be entered in a raffle for a prize. I thought that was a cool idea.

Baby shower
LIF will hate this because it's different, but I went to a bridal shower once where they had a comedian (she does baby showers, too). The bride didn't open gifts. It was the most minimally painful shower I've been to.

Re: Baby shower
I did a themed baby shower for my sister. I based it on children’s books. Some of the books I used were
“guess how much I love you” for that I had the game guess the kisses in the jar.
If you give a mouse a cookie: for the favors I had the cookie mix in mason jars
We had a diaper raffle and used the book “oh the places you will go”. I found a cute poem that went perfectly with it.
I also had a candy bar with trucks. The candy was in the trucks and hard hats. Super cute! And I used the book “goodnight, goodnight construction site”
We made punch and floated a blue rubber ducky in it. I used the book “the ugly duckiling”.
And so on... have fun! I love planning showers!!

My mother did something similar for both my and my SIL's showers. Instead of a wishing well or books, she put diaper pyramid on the invitation with a little card with a poem about bringing diapers and/or wipes. I didn't have to buy a pack of diapers until DS was like 5 months old. It was awesome.

Re: Baby shower
My favorite have been the small baby showers (small in terms of not many guests and intimate).
For themes, I’ve seen everything from “welcome baby boy/girl” to Hawaii and even Dumpling themed. All are fine. It gives you a way to go with decorations.
Please have alcoholic drinks for non pregnant guests! I’d rather have a glass of wine at the party vs a favor!
Entertainment is variable. At one, we decorated onsies (which is fun, but not really useful). The game I like the best is identifying baby food (tasting optional). It’s a lot of fun and people get into it! We had a whole lot and it was a contest (with mixed flavors to make it tough).
Love the idea of hiring a comedian/magician or adult entertainment and foregoing the opening of presents! Honestly, with online registry, many ship presents direct to home now. I recently went to a holiday party with an awesome magician and it was so fun.

Re: Baby shower
Booze all the way! I also think the gift thing depends on your crowd. I would not mind not opening presents, but I know my family expects it and would be disappointed if we hadn't opened gifts at my shower. A lot of people went off registry or did custom/handmade gifts so it was important to them to see my reaction, which I get.
As for a theme/decorations... do you know if they're doing something specific with the nursery? For our DD, her nursery was all grey and pink so my mom and sister did hot air balloon them with all grey and pink.
I'd keep activities to a minimum... they had a LOT of stuff at my shower- baby block decorating, decorating letters of the alphabet to hang on the wall of the nursery which didn't happen since like no one did it lol, guess the prices for baby items which everyone loved and participated in, bingo for gift opening which everyone did, and even more that I can't think of... the more you can do at your seat, the better, IMO.
