Baby Furniture
Ok, so DH and I were talking last night about Baby Furniture. How much did you all spend? We have friends that are ordering from Behrs and spending 3K on a baby 3 piece furniture set? Then I have other friends that bought theirs at Babies R Us for A LOT less.
What is the average? We're trying to budget and were looking online and they vary a lot. We're not showy people. Thanks

Re: Baby Furniture
wow... our bedroom "set" (they aren't all from the same set they are just all white) will probably cost about $1000 with tax - that is a crib, a five-drawer dresser, a changing table with three drawers, and a hutch for the changing table.
that doesn't include bedding or an area rug, or the recliner - but i doubt that all those together would be more than $600 - $800 more. $3000 sounds like a LOT to me.

Re: Baby Furniture
We are taking quality, versatility and reality into account when we purchase our furniture. All furniture sold in the US has to pass certain safety guidelines and the reality is...I am no way spending $3000 on something I can get just as safe and durable for half the price!!!

Re: Baby Furniture
We actually just bought a crib. I wanted something that would convert to a toddler and full bed...and got something that does both plus converts to a day bed. We spent close to $1k for it - including the conversion bar (which was not a lot of $$) for the toddler bed and the mattress which was a few $$ as well as shipping/delivery.
We had a solid maple dresser that we had refinished for an incredible price (under $500). I had a hard time with the idea of shelling out $$$ for veneered furniture that cost more than what it would cost me to refinish a solid piece. I also didn't like that child furniture is smaller (the drawers aren't as deep as adult furniture so in essence it won't grow with your child regardless of how it's marketed).
I didn't want a glider or traditional rocker - aesthetically I couldn't get over the look of them though I will admit gliders are super comfy. We went with a fun rocker that will grow with our child and they will have it for a lifetime...it was just under $500.
The range is whatever you want it to be. Research and find what is most important to you (obviously safety was first for us then the desire for solid wood as opposed to veneered pieces) and you will no doubt find something you are comfortable with spending.

Re: Baby Furniture
Our whole set was 4 pieces It cost about 1800. We are lucky because the grandparents bought us our furniture. I researched furniture for a while before I picked out set. i wanted something safe and sturdy that would last through another baby

Re: Baby Furniture
well, we bought a very well rated, stylish, and solid wood (no particle board glue degassing!) crib and changing table/dresser from.... walmart of all places. The crib converts to a toddler bed, so it should work well for us until Crouton is a little man......The crib was $315 (including the conversion rail), and the changer/dresser was something like $280.
we assembled both pieces already, and they are VERY solid and nice quality... they look like they cost 3X the price.
oh, I should add that our mattress will be a rather high end / organic thing and will cost another $270....
I think the 'average' on LI is somewhere between $800-$2k... the higher end is usually purchased from a specialty baby furniture store, and the lower end from a large chain like target / babiesrus / walmart. the 2k price usually includes more furniture pieces... (changer, seperate dresser, crib...)
It is entirely possible to spend MUCH less and still get a safe crib and decent furniture. baby bargains recommends IKEA cribs (which often cost under $200)

Re: Baby Furniture
I think I am going to end up buying two cribs, an upholstured glider and like Colleen said having some solid furniture refinished or painted to match. I am not big into "disposable" furniture and would like it to be usable for a number of years.

Re: Baby Furniture
Mine was $2200. I got it at BBB. I have the crib that converts to a toddler bed and later to a full size bed. I have the 5 drawer chest and the dresser with the hutch. It will last a long time.

Re: Baby Furniture
We bought this set (only we got the 5 drawer chest instead of the armoire)
Included was the matress & changing pad- All together $2,150.
I think it is totally worth it because it is a crib that converts into a bed and the baby will get many years of usage out of this set.

Re: Baby Furniture
my MIL bought us our crib which was $250 from BRU. We used DH's chest drawers and moved it into the closet for DD to use and bought ourselves a long dresser from a furniture store in the clearance center (and a matching night table too!!) that him and I use and we placed a changing pad on top of it for DD and her things. We are in a one bed condo and utilize our space as best as possible.

Re: Baby Furniture
Altogether, our BRU set cost about $1,500 but IMO, I could have gotten either the same stuff for way cheaper, or better furniture elsewhere for that price
