Baby cereal, how much?

We had DD 4 month appt last week and the Dr. said we can start baby cereal this week, 2 bottles a day. So DH went out and bought rice cereal but the bottle is not really clear on how much to give. DD is currently at 4.5 oz of formula every 3-3.5 hrs. How much do I add? Is it safe to give it in her bottle?

Baby cereal, how much?

I think they say not to give it in the bottle anymore, but from a bowl. We skipped cereal and did oatmeal, but it said for the first feeding to use 1 tbs of oatmeal with like 4-5 tbs of BM or formula. You just make it really watery so they get used to using the spoon and swallowing.

Re: Baby cereal, how much?

Oh. So if 1tbs = 2.5 oz, then I should be giving her about 9 tbsp of cereal for her 4.5 oz of formula? Sorry, but I am OCD about measurements. Chat Icon

Re: Baby cereal, how much?

My DD's pediatrician said start with 1 tablespoon of cereal and mix in the formula to make it watery. My DD drinks 6 oz at a time. When just starting out, my ped. said only go up to 5 tablespoons of oatmeal at one sitting but mind you, not until DC gets the hang of eating. So start off with 1 tablespoon and increase the amount once DC gets the hand of eating and swallowing. HTH

The cereal right now is in addition to the bottle... so u make her 4.5 oz bottle like you normally do... and then you prepare separately in a bowl one tablespoon of Cereal (i used oatmeal) with 4-5 tablespoons of formula

At 4 months, most of her nutrition will still come from her bottle... so i give bottle first and then cereal an hour or so later

Yes exactly what the other posters said. Mix a little formula into her cereal and stir it until it's thin and a little soupy to start with. You'll get thicker as you go on.
Then, when she's done eating her cereal, you give her the bottle to wash it down. Did the Dr. say anything about fruit?

So you give the bottle after the cereal? I'm getting mixed advice about this. This is what I thought, you give the bottle after. However on another forum, I was told I was wrong and am going against everything they read. That I have it all backwards.

we mixed 1 tbs of oatmeal with formula from the 6oz bottle he would have after the cereal.. He gets the same amount of formula... just some is in the cereal. We just use as much formula from the bottle as we need to get the consistency we need... it really is not that much.

I found thin was no good for DS the first time. I made it thicker day 2 and he ate it all no problem.

Baby cereal, how much?

I never measured. Just mix some up in a bowl (NO BOTTLE) and feed until they are done.....you will know when they are done.

It really is that simple. Feeding is not a science so the less you think and worry about it the easier it is.

Baby cereal, how much?

I think you should call your ped and clarify with them if you're this confused and unsure.

Personally I waited until 5 months. Skipped rice and went right to oatmeal. Mixed some with some formula to make it thin (like slightly thicker then actual formula) and SPOON feed it. In the beginning most of it will come back out anyway.

No measuring, it's not necessary. Follow your babies cues. They will let you know when they have had enough. And definitely NOT IN THE BOTTLE

Baby cereal, how much?

OMG! DH called and said he already gave her some of the cereal this morning. He said he added half of a scoop of cereal into her bottle with a level 2 nipple. Baby drank it, did not choke and fell right asleep. Well the good thing is that she didn’t choke right?

We went right to oatmeal (IMO, rice cereal is total crap). Started out by giving 1 tbs oatmeal mixed with 4-5 tbs formula. We gave the oatmeal an hour and a half AFTER her regular bottle.

You should not be putting cereal IN the bottle.

That's A LOT of cereal. I give 2 tsp of cereal with enough formula to thin it out. I don't measure formula in cereal. The actual bottle ounces I keep the same. You're not replacing a bottle with cereal, you're giving a little cereal in addition to the bottles. My DS still gets five 6oz bottles a day but in addition to that, he gets a little cereal too. Does that make sense? Chat Icon

ETA - My son is also 4 months

Always the bottle first. The formula is their main nutrition. The cereal and baby foods are just bonus. They don't NEED the baby food........it's more for practice chewing, swallowing, texture, etc. The formula is most important. I always gave a bottle, then food about 45 min later.

Because they should be eating from a spoon. You're giving them cereal not to bulk up their bottles and bellies, it's for them to practice chewing, swallowing, using utensils, getting use to texture, etc. What's the sense really in making them drink cereal? The purpose of cereal and baby foods is to prepare them for table food, not to bulk up their bottle. KWIM?

Re: Baby cereal, how much?

Just to interject...you can give babies cereal in their bottles if they are having reflux issues to thicken their formula. We did that under the direction of DS's pediatric gastroenterologist, in addition to reflux meds. It is only slightly thicker so there's really no worry about the baby choking on it, and it is mixed in so it's not obvious to the baby that there's cereal in the bottle. At 4.5 months we began feeding him cereal on a spoon and there was definitely no confusion.

That being said, I'd only add cereal to a baby's bottle if the dr suggests it specifically since babies don't necessarily need the extra calories so young.

This is also how we were told to give it.
