Re: babies w/milk allergy
I only recommend the powder nutramigen b/c it is the only formula that has a probiotic in it. The probiotic helps heal the babies gut that was inflammed by the allergen. It also stops blood in stool quickly
The other reason I prefer nutramigen over allimentum is that it contains recommended DHA, does not contain MCT oil or sucrose (which is 2nd ingredient). The issue with sucrose is that when gut is inflammed from allergen the first enzyme removed is sucrase (which digests sucrose), therefore sucrose can not be fully digested, and causes gas issues and gi issues for little one - nutramigen has glucose polymers that are digested by about 5 enzymes.
The company also gives out some free samples to try.
ALthough, if you are unsure of it being a true milk pro allergy then you can go try gentlease first. OTherwise if it is a true allergy you will need a hypoallergenic product (nutramigen or allimentum)

Re: babies w/milk allergy
DS had a true milk allergy so he was on Neocate, which is amino acid based rather than soy or any type of milk base. True milk allergies tend to go hand in hand with soy allergies so switching to soy for a dairy allergy is not usually an option.
Kids with milk protein allergies have a hard time digesting the protein in milk so they usually do well on a cow's milk based formula that is pre-digested like Allimentum or Neutramigen or some doctors switch you to a soy based formula.
Good luck!

Enfamil Nutramigen
that's what she's on now too, although we started out with Elecare because at 6 weeks old, she couldn't tolerate anything else. We weaned her off of elecare at 5 months, but haven't been able to wean her off the Nutramagin...she's 9 months.

Re: babies w/milk allergy
DS was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy by 3 weeks old. I had him on Gentlease. The pedi put him on Nutramigen. Which helped a bit. But he was also allergic to soy at that point. They put him on Alimentum. Which almost put him int the hospital. By 5 weeks old he was put on Elecare...it is a hypo-allergenic formula available by prescription. It is ridiculously expensive... He is 14 months old and is still on it. He still has issues with soy...I have to start to introduce milk in 2 weeks!!!
He also has reflux. It goes hand-in-hand with the allergies....he is on Axid.

I EBF, but my GI said if we did FF, they would start us on Alimentum and if that didn't work, switch to Elecare.

DS was the same exact way and we did not know what to do with ourselves. When he would wake up, we would get a pit in our stomach because all he would do was cry.
Turned out he had acid reflux, was put on meds for that and after 5 different formulas was put on Nutramigen and he is now a happy and 100% different baby.
Hang in there

Enfamil Nutramigen
We tried this with mine, but they both HATED it....would choke and spit it up. So now we use Enfamil soy formula (and sometimes Up and Up brand).
