Jess - have your RE agent ask the sellers agent if they have shut off everything that is in their name. If so, then you can set it up in your name to start on Tuesday. Start making those calls today.

In my experience, O & R (Orange and Rockland - gas, electric, etc.) is fast. Cable will take forever and I would go to the post office to have mail forwarded the day before closing. Ask you Realtor as they may have different advice, this is just what we did. Chat Icon

if you have a definite closing date, then you can call and tell them to start the day of closing. we called cable and lipa to tell them we would be closing may 1st.

Re: At what point do I go about setting up

as soon as we had a closing date, we called water and electric to set up accounts. they informed us of the cancellation dates that the sellers had set up and they just had the service switched to our names for that date. this way, the utilities weren't actually shut off, but the billing ended for them on that day and started for us.

we waited to hook up phone and cable until we had moved in and things were set up. we didn't want to pay for services that we wouldn't be using for a few weeks.

Re: At what point do I go about setting up

Call all of the utility companies and tell them you want the service on in your name as of the date of closing. If they tell you that the sellers haven't put in to have things shut off, then tell you REA. Your REA can tell the sellers' REA and ask them to have it turned off.

Cable usually requires someone to come out to set everything up / turn it on. You can call now to make the appointment, though.
