When do kids give up sippy/straw cups and instead start to drink from regular cups with no lid?

DS is 2.5 and I'm wondering if I should start practicing this with him yet. He still drinks from sippy cups mostly and sometimes a straw cup. He bites the straws and the spouts of these cups & they get SO disgusting right away. I figure why not get him used to drinking from a regular cup but not sure what the norm is as far as the age to be coordinated enough for this to not be a total mess.

He is definitely old enough--just give him a small cup at meals with only a little in it.

Re: At what age

We started practicing about once a day at about 15 months and she had it down by a little over two.

DD is 5.5 and I still give her a cup with a lid and a straw Chat Icon She's known how to drink out of regular cups for years now but is CONSTANTLY knocking them over. I use the take and toss with the straw hole and buy a huge bag of straws at the dollar store.

My DD is 4.5 and can drink out of a regular cup, but my house would be a sticky wet mess with no lid, so we still use lids.

I also buy the take & toss cups and use them.

This. My kids knew how to drink from regular cups long before they were 2 but it's just messy. My DS is almost 3 and he still gets sippy cups 95% of the time, my DD had them until age 5. Sippy cups are just easier and portable!! Chat Icon

DS is 3 and can drink from a regular cup, but we give him straw cups still. It prevent spilling if he knocks into it. Plus daycare wants them so they can carry the cups around.
