we did it last weekend when we were on vacation... a little over 7mos... we put a sweatshirt behind her because there was a lot of room.

we did at 5.5 months
we would put a sweatshirt behind her just to be safe
we try to keep the fisher price healthy care high chair in our car though - she fits in it much better

Once he was sitting without tipping anymore, same with carts. His first time was the day he turned 4 months old. Both my girls were closer to 5 months.
