Astoria or Bethpage Mortgage
DH and I are signing our contract tonight and we need to get our mortgage squared away this week. I was shopping around for a 30-yr conventional loan (before actually applying) and ended up speaking with a few banks, including Astoria and Bethpage FCU. Seems like Astoria and Bethpage have the best interest rates available and the lowest fees. Maybe I am missing something though? Does anyone here who has a mortgage with either Astoria of BFC feel like sharing their experience? (Rates, Fees, closing time, etc.) TIA!
(I checked Chase and BOA too, but their interest rates were higher, even if we bought a point! I am not quite sure why, but just wanted to put it out there for those who may also be shopping around for the best mortgage right now.)

Re: Astoria or Bethpage Mortgage
Our mortgage is through BFCU where we are also members. It was the easiest experience by far. They were responsive and answered all our questions. We didn't have to keep on top of them to get us information and we closed our loan on/about the day they said we would. Their fees were about $5,000 less than other banks/brokers and the best rates as well.
We just refinanced with them, and from application to closing was 3 weeks tops.
The other thing I liked about going with BFCU is that they haven't sold a mortgage in the last 15 years, so I'm pretty confident that my mortgage will always be with them, and not sold to another bank down the road.

Re: Astoria or Bethpage Mortgage
We looked into Bethpage, TFCU and Astoria Federal and boy did I agonize over who to go with! We went with Astoria and I'm so glad we did! We're closing tomorrow and the service has been fantastic, both our loan officer and our mortgage processor have been so helpful and really helped speed the process along.
The bank inspector had an issue with our basement staircase, which caused a delay in the process, but it was quickly resolved thanks to the diligence of our loan officer. Whenever we had a question, he would go right upstairs and check with the underwriter or the mortgage processor and get back to us with an answer that same day. You can't beat the small bank service.
We also locked in at a great rate—4.5 with one point. Our closing costs amount to 4% of the sale price of our home. Good luck!

My original mortgage was with BFCU and I refinanced with them too. Great experience both times, and great rates.
However, they did see my mortgage, so it's not true that they haven't sold one in 15 years. During my refinancing, I would have saved some money if they didn't sell it (something about a tax I wouldn't have to pay). I was a little annoyed but luckily it wasn't too much. It didn't stop me from refinancing with them.

Re: Astoria or Bethpage Mortgage
We just used BFCU and loved them. Very easy to work with and no hidden fees.
