Assisted Living in Nassau County
Does anyone know of any good assisted living homes that won't break the bank?? we're trying to move my grandparents up from Florida. They don't receive Medicaid...just social security. TIA!

Re: Assisted Living in Nassau County
There really isn't anything out there... My friend had to put his Mom in one and it started at $4000/month. She was pretty good taking care of herself for the first year. Then when she started to need more help, they added more money each month. After3 years, they were up to almost $7000/month.. I haven't seen or hear of any assisted living that is cheapish.... Good luck.

Some have shared suites, which would be cheaper for your grandparents, since they can share a 1 bedroom. I don't think you'll find anything less than $3000 per person/month. Like the pp, they add $$ if medications have to be managed, higher levels of care, etc. My grandmother has been in one in Plainview for 3 years and we're using her SS and her savings to pay for it. The costs are astronomical, but she's happy there and there is no alternative, since I'm her only relative alive and my husband and I both work and can't take care of her full time. If your grandfather is a veteran, there is some assistance program available through the VA if he has less than $70K in assets. Hope it works out for you and your family.

We just looked at sunrise in Holbrook for my grandma. She had dementia and while she can still walk and do things for herself the cost is about 6500 and it depends on how many med you are on, this can increase the cost. The va contributes about 1100.00 a month from the convo we had with them. It does take time for the paperwork to be processed. It's apparently a little confusing but they will reimburse retroactive. Good luck!

Re: Assisted Living in Nassau County
I can't comment on assisted living, but I work within the Medicaid system and I am very scared.
Cutbacks have kicked in and even people who normally would have gotten 24 hour care or a live-in.........it seems to be no more. Especially if they have a diagnosis like dementia that requires oversight and supervision.
Also family really are being made at this point to be part of the support network for caregiving.
If family have been paying out of pocket too, this is also now being taken into account.

Re: Assisted Living in Nassau County
My DH's grandma is in assisted living in Suffolk but she's in Western Suffolk. It's right off the LIE. I don't know how much it is and I don't know the name but if you want more information I can ask my MIL.
