Aspartame?
Anyone is Aspartame is something I should stay away from? I see it in diet soda, crystal light mix and I saw it in my fat free yogurt? I thought I read somewhere that pregnant woman should stay away from this.

Re: Aspartame?
yes, this is not good at all for pregnancy or everyone in general. If you google it there are many issues it can cause for babies during pregnancy.

Re: Aspartame?
that stuff is nasty I've been staying clear of it for years... I believe when it's metabolized, it breaks down into something like formadehyde (a fixative) and glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter that can cause neurotoxic damage in high doses)
FYI: there are several brands of low fat and fat-free yogurt that have sugar instead of artificial sweeteners... to make it easy while shopping... if you buy organic, by definition, it can't have aspartame

Re: Aspartame?
I have GD and saw the nutritionist over at Winthrop Diabetic Center- as far as aspartame in your third tri it is ok- when the baby is fully developed it does not cross over the placenta. this is what I was told. however she did say in the first and sec you should stay clear of it. HTH.

Re: Aspartame?
Aspartame itself may be unable to cross the placenta, but it is broken down and the toxic metabolites are in the blood. It is really those metabolites, not aspartame itself, that people worry about.
IMO, I wouldn't drink it... pregnant or not.

Re: Aspartame?
i am told that it is ok occassionally but splenda is better there are yogurt and 4c makes a crystal light type power with splenda I have gd and cant have reg soda (if you dont have gd there is no reason why you cant have reg soda but decaffinated is better) there is also a soda that has splenda called diet rite most walmarts carry it the black cherry and cola are OK not the best but better than nothing. but look for the 4c has become a life saver for me I hate water
