artificial insemination

I just found out that a friend has to go through this process.

Her husbands sperm is defective and has low motility.

Can you give any insight on process, procedures, time frame of getting pregnant, costs.

Her first consultation is july 6. she is curious how quick they might actually do the fisrt try

Re: artificial insemination

Its called an IUI.. The sperm is taken from the male washed maybe 1 or 2x hen inseminated through the cervix with a cathater and hopefully the sperm makes it up the fallopian tubes and fertilizes the egg.. Its perfectly timed so the egg is where its supposed to be or will be there before the sperm dies.. Gl to your friend Chat Icon

Re: artificial insemination

Well she has to wait for her period and then on the 3r day of period she gets blood work done.. She starts getting monitered to measure how many and the sizes of her folicles (she may be put on clomid or femara) within 2 weeks she should ovulate she will get a trigger shot to make the egg fall.. she will get inseminated then wait 2 weeks to see if it works.. So 1 mnth from the time she gets her period..

Re: artificial insemination

A lot of it depends on where she is in her cycle @ her 1st appt. They will probably want to take bloodwork on day 3 of her cycle. It will also depend on what tests they want to do on her. If they want to do an HSG (to check if anything is blocked in her tubes), that is usually done on day 8 of the cycle. They'll probably also take blood and send her to a lab to get some other blood tests done. Depending on how quickly all of this is done, they may start her the next cycle. If the dr decides to do an IUI, she'll probably be put on Clomid. Clomid basically makes you produce more than 1 follicle so it increases the number of targets for the sperm to hit. She will go into the dr on day three for bloodwork and a sonogram. You take Clomid on days 3-7 of the cycle usually and will go back to the doctor around day 10 for blood and sono. They'll measure how big the follicles are and when they are large enough, they may have her use a shot to trigger ovulation. The IUI is usually scheduled for the next day. The IUI is a piece of cake. It was over in like 30 seconds. I was suprised how easy it was.

She should check with her insurance company to see what is covered. Her employer may have opted for more or less coverage, but the insurance company will tell her what's covered. I am lucky to have all of my IUI's covered but I think the out of pocket cost would be $500. (Every place is different.)

Also, some doctors will do the process differently, but this is how it went for me. Hope this helps!
