Are we so overworked that....

we don't have the time to exercise the same personal hygeine practices on our children as we do on ourselves? As a substiutute teacher I meet so many kids and so many of them just aren't taken care of. Why is this? Chat Icon

I know - I am a teacher and the way that some of these kids show up every day makes me so sad.

Dirt under the fingernails, not showering in DAYS, smelly clothing - it's so sad. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Are we so overworked that....

My Mom worked in what most people here would consider a "good" school district in suffolk

she kept a box of cereal in her office- for the kids that came to school w/o breakfast

she took our old coats in- for the kids that were sent to school w/o one

and even my old sneakers-

very sad, very, very sad- Chat Icon

Re: Are we so overworked that....

I just have to share here...

My stepdaughters are always filthy. when they are home with their mom, they never bathe - and they are 10 and 16 years old!!!!!!!

When I met my older stepdaughter at 12 yrs old, she had a bird's nest in her hair!!!! Chat Icon I spent 3 hrs getting it out - and it was like the 1st month I was dating my DH!!!

Their mom is a slob, and the house is like something Oprah would do a story on - I can't even describe it - you guys wouldnt believe it.
My younger stepdaughter will take a shower at our house. She'll come to us the following weekend with her hair so greasy it looks wet! I'll ask her the last time she took a shower was, and she'll say at our house!!!!

I dont get it.

They also never brush their teeth - now they'll do it at our house. My younger stepdaughter had about 10 cavities last time she went to the dentist - which was over a year ago. Her nails are also dirty and disgusting...

DH and I dont get it. Its like talking to a wall when talking to their mom 9who is nice but has no parenting skills) - so, there you go. I have to live with this!!!! Chat Icon

Re: Are we so overworked that....

I recently started working as a kindergarten aide and it is unbelievable the way some kids come to school.

A lot of the kids in the class have teeth that are visibly rotting (one was even complaining his tooth hurt yesterday). Some look like they don't get their hair brushed in the morning.

Granted, a lot of the kids in this class are eligible for the free lunch program - so they are definitely "poor". But it doesn't mean the parents can't at least brush their hair and clean their teeth!

I seriously could have written this, except for the fact that I have two stepsons who are 14 and 10. Its really sad. But also, I think it gets to a point where the kids just have to be old enough to know that they have to brush their teeth, take a shower (and wash their face, hair and body -- not just stand there) and take care of themselves a bit. I try to get them to do it on their own when they are with us, but I usually have to say something. It's really hard. I don't want my stepkids to be the dirty smelly kids in school. Chat Icon

It's so sad and money has nothing to do with it - we didn't have much growing up nor live in an affluent neighborhood, but we were ALWAYS clean, bathed, and dressed in clean (no namebrand) clothes.

Parents just need to show their kids better hygiene and, oh I don't know, BE PARENTS!

I'm sorry...I disagree with this completely! I have an 11 year old stepdaughter. No matter how many times we tell her/show her how to do her hair, match clothes, etc...she's 11 and just not at an age where she cares about how she looks. (I'm looking forward to her being a teenager for this reason only...LOL) Just because I can't watch her 24/7 to make sure everything is perfect before she leaves the house...this makes me a bad parent? Re: Are we so overworked that....

i DATED someone who had a son one year older than mine. i was not his step mother, and i had to clip his nails MANY TIMES. i also had to remind him to shower.

there ARE MANY parents who don't do the basics for their children.

the other side of this coin... my son, who i love more than life, itself, is an interesting case. he showers every day, brushes his teeth twice a day, clips his own nails..... BUT THE KID WILL GO TO SCHOOL WITH WRINKLED CLOTHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i don't get it. i stop him when i can (i'm not always the one to drop him off at the bus stop)

I agree- not is it ALWAYS the parents fault. I have had many a student who refused to bathe, wear clean clothes, etc and the parent had done all they could.
