From everything I've heard, yes, it is safe. I avoided them like the plague during my pregnancy but ate them the whole time I was nursing my son.

I thought I would have to give up everything while breastfeeding. But the more I read I realize that that is not true. Unless your baby has specific reactions to certain foods you can pretty much have anything you want in moderation.

Sorry to crash but as a BTDT mom who is currently nursing my 11 month old DS and I thought the same thing, that I couldn't have anything, but in reality can I have everything! I even have a drink or two every now and then. All the breastfeeding books say that it's totally okay as long as you can drive you can nurse. I only have one or two drinks once a month if that, maybe even every two months because I'm not a big drinker but it's nice to go out to dinner with DH and have a glass of wine.

Also, DS can't have dairy, the second it touches his mouth his face breaks out, all red and terrible eczema but it doesn't bother him at all if I have dairy... no reaction at all. I know that isn't the case with all moms who have a DC with a milk allergy but it was for us so that was great.

Yea, it's a lot of trial and error with nursing as far as stuff you can/can't eat. It's a good idea to keep a mental note of what you eat when you are nursing, so if your baby does have a reaction, you can narrow it down to something you may have eaten.

With DD, I never limited my diet. Obviously watched alcohol intake, but that's it. Sometimes kids will have allergies, and you'll need to augment your diet-- but that will become apparent and you'll make a change if you need to. I think this is most likely the case with dairy. My daughter has a nut allergy (which I became aware of well after I stopped nursing), and I ate nuts all the time while nursing and there was never a problem.
