aol instant messaging.
i cant stand when i see a friend signed on to instant messaging, i write them a lil hello, and they write back "i cant talk now", then put your "away" message up, thank you very much. ok vent over.

I do see how this can be done in a nicer way. Some people prefer the brevity of AIM. Some people use it as a primary means of communication.
If I dont answer an IM, people call me. And when I cant or just dont want to talk they get horribly insulted.
