Anyone's dc go through a head banging phase?

For the past few weeks, ds has been really protesting his afternoon naps. He used to go down fairly easily between 12-3 or 1-4. Recently, I'd put him down and he'd take forever to soothe himself to sleep. And now he's doing this crazy head banging action on his crib rail which looks pretty painful too. He'll roll around, run around his crib, headband for 2 hours and when he finally falls asleep, he goes on to nap for an additional 3 hours. But sometimes he gets services so I need to wake him up after an hour and he'll usually be overtired. It's driving me nuts. Anyone else's dc go through this? If I try putting him to nap later, I'm worried it'll mess up his bedtime. Ds is 20 months and he sleeps about 10 hrs at night. TIA!
