Anyone with Dr. Based in NYC?

Where are you planning to deliver if you don't live in the city?

My doctor is based with Beth Israel. I really like her and trust her. Plus, since I work in the city, the appts. are much easier to manage then they would be if my doctor was on LI, where I live.

I won't live that far from the city, but I'm still concerned about getting there in time. My doctor thinks I would have plenty of time, esp. since this is my first child. DH has already said he will be a wreck when the time comes and doesn't think he can manage driving to the city that day without getting us in a wreck, so we would need a car service.

What are others doing? I'm curious since I would imagine some of you have drs. in the city also. Thanks!

Im delivering in Beth Israel as well! I live in Queens but work in the city...my doctor is right there on 1st Avenue and 21st Street!

My husband says he wants a couple of drills to get to the city, find the parking lot etc etc...I think you're going to have more than enough time...your husband needs to be calm for you so a couple of drills should do it! Chat Icon

we live in brooklyn and I will be delivering at NYU... when we took a tour of labor and delivery, we made sure to see where the parking lots are and how long it might take us to get there... it wasnt that bad, took us about 20-25 min...

I just delivered at NYU! They're awesome!!!

We took the subway to the hospital. When we went home, DH parked in NYU's valet parking ($20) and it took us 8 minutes to get home (we're in long island city)

The night nurses are so nice at NYU - I completely forgot their names, but they are all really helpful. NYU is also really great if you are planning on breastfeeding. There are a few lactation specialists on call all the time - I met with one for 40 minutes or so one on one - and every day they give a breastfeeding class.

one thing - bring flip flops - you'll want them for the showers. No showers in your bathrooms in your room. You'll have to walk across the hall to use one.

Re: Anyone with Dr. Based in NYC?

I am delivering at Columbia. Am I a little nervous yes - but I have already spoken with my doctor and we agreed that I would go right away if my water broke or I was having contractions 5-7 mins apart - he would rather I go in early than late. As he pointed out - I would have plenty of time to get there.

I only switched doctors recently. I was working in NYC and had a doctor on LI and was supposed to deliver at NSUH Manhasset. But I have a possible complication with the baby that may require surgery before she can be fed so we all felt that the baby would be better evaluated for the possible rare condition at columbia.

Re: Anyone with Dr. Based in NYC?

I'm with Lenox Hill and live in Bayside.

I'm not concerned about it though. I figure if we can't drive in, we'll take a car service. If anything- my LIRR trip is only 20 mins and we can cab it from there. There's a parking lot on the same block OR, if worse comes to worse, my DH has a city job- I'll have him take a "co. car" LOL, so we can park anywhere Chat Icon (Imagine!)

Re: Anyone with Dr. Based in NYC?

Thanks for your replies! I figured there were some women out there with a similar situation. I was getting worried about this, but then I remembered if I still lived in my old neighborhood in Brooklyn, it would take me just as long to get to Beth Israel. So not such a difference really.

Yes, I think we will need to take a car service. DH is nervous driving into the city normally, and I think he'll be a mess that day. Better for everyone!Chat Icon

Re: Anyone with Dr. Based in NYC?

we live in Brooklyn, I work in Manhattan and will deliver at Roosevelt. it is a PAIN to get to my doctor for visits from Brooklyn because i work downtown and her office is uptown (Central Park West) so i need to take 3 trains to get there. Its easier taking it from work so i don't have to change trains as often. I'm not worried about getting to hospital... i'll cab it if it happens from work
