Anyone teach there DC sign language?
I have been teaching DD a couple of words in sign language so its easier for us to communicate while she is not talking yet....she is 13 months. I actually think its pretty cool. Did anyone else do this? Do you think its weird if she is not hearing impaired?

Re: Anyone teach there DC sign language?
My daughter's school started teaching her sign language at about 9/10 months old and it was a godsend! Long before she was able to speak, she had a sign vocabulary of up to 20 words or so, and was able to communicate her basic needs to us, which seriously cut down on the temper tantrums and fits.

Not at all... sorry to crash, but my sister did this with my niece. My sister is a speech pythologist and taught my niece baby sign langauge. It was great! She would sign for "more" "food" when she wants to eat and "stop or finished" when she was done. I'm pregnant now and my sister got me the Baby Sign Language book. I can't wait to try it.

Re: Anyone teach there DC sign language?
My brother and SIL did this with their first son. They weren't completely consistent with it, but it still worked. He signed more and bottle. I forget what other ones.
DH teaches at a school for the deaf, hard of hearing and CODA (children of deaf adults). I would like to do it when we have kids eventually, but I have to learn to sign altogether.

I do think it's kind of weird and never understood it, but that's just me. I know few people who do it and they think it's pretty cool . Your child- your business,KWIM? if you like teaching your child baby sign language and you think it's pretty cool that's great and you should continue doing it. Who cares what others think(including me,lol)

Re: Anyone teach there DC sign language?
Sorry to crash, but my cousin is deaf and when her little brother was born, everyone in the family continued to sign and my aunt would sign to the baby. Well, when he was about 6-8 months old, he was able to communicate back with sign - he knew how to sign "milk", "more", simple things like that, but he was definitely able to communicate much sooner than if they had waited until he was able to speak.
I would like to try to teach my DC sign language (when we have kids).

Re: Anyone teach there DC sign language?
Both my SIL and neighbor have done this and they said it's been great being able to communicate with their babies.
It really cuts down on the crying and it's really cute seeing the baby communicating with parents.
I'll be teaching DS as well when he's close to 5 months.
