Consumers didn't like it very much. Go for the CX9 if you want the Mazda.

We have it and love it. We have the grand touring edition. I did not care for the other versions of the car. When we purchased ours the CX-9 was not out yet. I love the car. The only thing I wish it had was better gas mileage or that it would take non-premium gas. Other than that it is fantastic. We are really happy with it.

actually, Consumer Reports didn't like the CX9 either. neither of them were "recommended"
I know someone who has a CX7 and loves it but says the MPG is really bad. CR said it gets 18 MPG overall.
ETA: the CX9 is based on the platform of the Ford Edge - not sure if that matters...
