Anyone have solar panels on the roof?
How do you like it is it worth it? I know they are nasty to look at but we were thinking of putting them on the back of the roof at our new house when we move in...

Re: Anyone have solar panels on the roof?
We have them and they are working great. We make about 2/3rd of our electric. The roof you put them on (back or front) depends on which direction the roof faces. The roof needs to get a certain amount of sunlight during the day for you to be eligible for the LIPA rebate. LIPA comes to your house and they sit on the roof with this device that can tell them how much sun you get throughout the whole year. The panels look better than you think especially now people think its cool. Although we were able to put them on our back roof.

I think they look awesome! Ours are all black, so it looks good, IMO. I've had them for just over a year. So far, we've made over 8,000 kWhs of electricity, and last year was very cloudy and rainy.

I was part of the Solar Tour last year, and will be this year too. It's where people and businesses who have solar panels allow interested people to come into their homes and businesses to see how people live day-to-day with the panels, instead of just listening to a salesperson tell you how great they are.
We should be able to break even in 10-12 years. Maybe less if LIPA raises the rates. They have a 25 year warranty, and no moving parts, so they should last 40+ years. All of that time, we'll be saving/making money.
I plan on putting hot water panels on the portion of the roof that isn't covered right now.
We have 8100 watts of panels, which is pretty big for a residential home. You don't have to get a system that size. You could get a single panel, all the way up to as many panels as you can find space for.
I love talking about my solar panels, so if you have any questions, I'm sure I can answer them.

We are going to do it when we move in and replace the roof. Im more concerned about saving money than aesthetics.

I am still toying with the idea. DH is not sold on it.
I am shocked that solar panels are not the norm at this day and age. It's a "free" energy, readily available. A very good alternative to fuel (and the damage it does....ie in Gulf of Mexico).

It's actually better than free. If you have a big enough system (ie, you use less than you make), LIPA will cut you a check at the end of the year!
It's guaranteed money in my pocket in the long run. After a 10ish year ROI, I'm making money for the next 15 years of the warranty, plus there's no reason why it won't last much longer than that. One of the best investments I've made.
