Anyone have pink flowering trees right now - Crape Myrtles?
That's right, I'm lookin at you JldDolphin.
I keep seeing these beautiful smallish trees with big pink flowers on them right now, and assumed they were Crape Myrtles. But I think it's the wrong season for them.
Jenn, I know you have a gorgeous one in front of your house - is it blooming right now? Or am I seeing something else?
I'm not gaga over the pink color but they're so beautiful and unexpected!
Anyone know what they are?

Hey Tricia!
Of course my Crape Myrtle is blooming right now. It's huge and goregous! We need to trim it a little at the end of this season, but it looks great. I'll have to have to take pics over the weekend. Here is some from last year at this time of year. ETA: It starts to bloom in July every year.

I LOVE these! We just bought one last week for our backyard. I have to wait until next season for some blooms I'm told.
We bought a muskogee crape myrtle (the purple, droopy one). I'll try to post a pic. Image Attachment(s):

crepe Myrtles bloom from My-Nov. here in GA. I have them all over my yard. White/pink and purple. They are sooo pretty. Fo your research on how to take care of them. We cut ours back every Fed. by their knuckles. they are beautiful and look like the last pic. posted. Droopy one. They have crepe Myrtle bushes which looks like the one posters.

Thanks for this info! Stupid question here....when you say by the knuckle, do you mean right above where that cluster is?
Also, how often do you water them? I'm in NC and we have red dirt/clay and the man at the nursery said 3x a week....does that sound right? It looks thirsty.

yes, the cluster. LOL I call it the knuckle. You can water them once a week really. It's a tree. We haven't watered at all here b/c we're in a drought and they are doing just fine. A little droppy but fine. Once we get rain they perk up again.

Thank you! We are in a drought too but they are allowing us to do a little watering because we just moved in. I feel guilty but don't want to kill my tree.
Do you think once a week is still good even though we just planted it?

Wow I can't believe this post, I was just thinking about this tree as I was driving down the I 20 I didn't know what they were called and I wanted to get a few for my yard.
I have a question I live in GA when is the latest I can plant one? And does the leaves fall in the fall and winter?
Thanks again for this post

Re: Anyone have pink flowering trees right now - Crape Myrtles?
I think if you just planted them than yeah you should water it 3x a week.
you can plant it in the fall. They start to bud in May flower in June-Sept. and die off in Nov. (this is for GA. residents). In Feb. you are to cut them down to the cluster part (we do above the cluster so they are not stunted and grow taller).
they are pretty and actually smell like a lilac. The pink one does. The white one doesn't smell as much. I can't remember if the purple one smells or not.

Thanks so much LisaI! I hope they smell, that would be great. I didn't know you can actually stunt their growth by where you cut the cluster.

Fall after the leaves fall off. But I need to go to Hicks again and find out if I cut it this year, will I not have blooms next year? I will let you know what I find out.

I can't yet offer advice, but I plan to plant them. They are native down here in Nc, so hopefully I won't kill it

you will have blooms every year, even after the first cut. i will double check on when to actually cut. the reasearch we have done for our zone (8) states dead winter. good luck. they're really nice.
