Anyone have an amnio done??

Has anyone had an amnio?

Can you just give me the details as to WHERE they do this on your body??

And, if you had it, was it horribly painful??

Like, worse than a brazilian? That's always my "meter" Chat Icon

Any experiences and details would be a big help!! THANK YOU!

Re: Anyone have an amnio done??

Had an amnio last year, it wasn't necessarily painful, but scary as hell (seeing a huge needle go into your belly= nerve wracking), and there was a bit of pressure. I was told to drink wine that night b/c it would help my uterus relax from cramping. I'm not the best person to ask though b/c we had ours done b/c of problems so I was under a ton of emotional distress at the time too.....

Where in your belly?

NOT in the belly button, right??

Someone was like oh I heard they put it in your belly button... and then I couldn't remember what the doc had said today -- she pointed to her belly -- but I don't think it was the button.

If it is the button, I think I'll pass out.

Other parts of the belly, I can tolerate.

Re: Anyone have an amnio done??

Honestly it depends on your OB or whoever is performing the amnio. They monitor where the baby is on the ultrasound b/c they have to be very careful about needle placement. Would they specifically aim for your belly button? No, they will select a spot that has ample fluid to draw from that is away from the baby.

Ahhh OK that makes sense.

Phew, thanks for the info.

I had an amnio with DD#2. It was honestly no big deal. Much less pain, discomfort than I expected. There is of course a pinch when the needle goes into the skin, but that is truly the worst part. I had a CVS this year, and the amnio was 10x easier!! And definately less painful than a brazilian!! Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have an amnio done??

I had an amnio this past June at 36 weeks. They put the needle in the my belly right under my breastbone. Right in the center. It really wasn't painful. The cramping is way worse than the needle. I felt crappy the whole rest of the day, sore & tired (prob from stress). It was a very quick procedure. Just plan to take it easy the rest of the day. I came home & got into bed.

Re: Anyone have an amnio done??

I had an amnio with AJ at 36 weeks. It was to check his lung maturity because they wanted him out ASAP. The anticipation is so much worse than the actual procedure. They numb you and then stick this long needle into your stomach (not your belly button). They use a sono machine to see where the best place to do it is. It was uncomfortable but didn't hurt. You could actually watch on the monitor and see the needle in your stomach Chat Icon They told me that sometimes that baby grabs the needle. Luckily that wasn't the case with us.

Re: Anyone have an amnio done??

It hurt less than a blood test for me. I was sooooo nervous. And I am.a HUGE baby with pain, needles, etc. But it was less than a pinch. Before I could flinch it was over.

It goes in to the side of belly and they try to avoid the placenta side. You might want to opt for one of the new blood tests like maternityt21 or harmony that tests for downs and trisomy disorders without being invasive.
