Anyone have a kid that will wake up siblings on purpose?

How do you handle it?

My DD has always been an early riser (6-6:15) and she has 2 volumes, loud and louder. We tell her all the time she needs to be quiet while everyone else is sleeping. She will sneak into her brothers' room and wake them up. It is so unfair and makes me angry because they are still cranky then I have to deal with all the sibling rivalry early in the AM. Not how I want to start my 13hour day with them. What should I do?

2 things came to my mind first:

1.) A rewards chart. So every time she leaves them alone she gets a sticker.

2.) Tell her there will be consequences if she wakes them up. Maybe take something away and she doesn't get said item until she stops?

My kids both did this at different points in time. I punished them (took away their current fave toy for a day) and that pretty much took care of it. Good luck!

My 5 year old DD used to do this. We started taking away tv for the day if she woke up her siblings. Worked like a charm.

I tried punishing & then I realized if I occupied his time he didn't do it. He used to wake her up because he was afraid to go down the basement by himself so he'd send her first (like an appetizer for the monster lurking there).

So at 6am, he was allowed to turn the TV on in my room (I can sleep through anything), have breakfast or I would read him his favorite book.

Thanks for the responses. She doesn't physically wake them up everyday but is EXTREMELY loud and will slam doors talk VERY loudly just pretty much be overall obnoxious. I told her this morning she will have the opportunity to earn a sticker for a reward chart (haven't started it yet) if she is able to get dressed, teeth brushed/face washed and watches TV quietly or plays quietly in the living room until breakfast time (7:30) Let's see how it goes

I have an app on my phone called soundmeter. One user review said he showed his kids what range an inside voice should be. Not sure if that will help you.

I use it to show DH how loud he snores.Chat Icon

DD does that all the time especially if she is up when I am leaving for work. She flips out if I don't say good bye to DS.

This morning I was putting my stuff in the car, my front door opens and both of them are screaming hysterically because I didn't say good bye to him.

She actually went up there, woke him up and told him to hurry up before I left.

My son used to do it and two things combined worked for us:

1. Punishment -- taking away things he enjoys for the day and really sticking to it.

2. Occupying the time from the time he woke up till the time the rest of the household woke up with things he liked.
I would leave his favorite books, toys and a nice morning snack--dried fruit, juice, cereal--out in a special place where he would enjoy them before everyone else woke up. This actually became his favorite time of the day: nobody bothers him and he can read, play and snack without being bother by his little sister! :)

P.S. just saw your reply and yes, he wouldn't actually wake her up by shaking her and screaming in her face but he would be loud and not considerate of others. So, we explained that it's rude and he an enjoy himself without all the noise. It worked- see #1 and #2 above!Chat Icon
