anyone have a fatty??
so during the winter, I couldn't walk my dogs (i'm pregnant and we had a pretty icy winter) and my dachshund packed on some poundage. does anyone have an overweight dog? if so, what kinda food do you feed them? i'm looking to get him a weight loss food, but not sure what to get. now that the weather is getting better, i'm hoping if i walk him twice a day (at least a mile each time) he'll lose it. he needs to lose about 3 pounds (that's huge on a small dog) i'm getting worried :(

Re: anyone have a fatty??
When I lived with my parents we had an overweight pug. The vet recommended Science Diet, I don't remember the exact name but it was for weight loss. It was kibble.

Re: anyone have a fatty??
my dog was a few pounds overweight and my vet said to reduce the food and supplement the difference with string beans. My dog LOVES the string beans and she has lost weight. She's about 28 pounds.
Instead of 3/4 cup food in the AM and 3/4 in the PM.. I'm giving her 1/2 cup food in the AM and 1/2 cup food plus 1/3 of a can of string beans in the PM.
I buy whatever cans of string beans on sale that are the "cut grean beans - no salt added" best sale I've seen lately is 5 cans for $3. And 1 can lasts 3 days.

Re: anyone have a fatty??
In addition to the extra exercise, consider cutting out bagged treats as most of them are really fattening. We treat with snow peas and apple slices. We also cut his food from 4 cups (breeder recommended) to 2 cups. He's gone from 71 pounds to 58 pounds and the vet says he's perfect right now.
Good luck! I know how hard it is in bad weather.

Re: anyone have a fatty??
Lilly porked up a bit over the winter. We've been feeding her Wellness Core - Reduced Calorie formula and she seems to have slimmed down a bit since she's been on it. She's an IG and *should* weigh about 11 pounds - she was up to almost 14 at the end of February. She now weighs 12.4, which is pretty ideal for her right now.

We did this with our Golden but used frozen string beans.

Re: anyone have a fatty??
I have a doxie also. They are naturally lazy and fatties lol
I had Izzy on Diet wellness food for a while but she hates it now
I just switched her to Halo and she seems to like it a lot better
I take her for walks a couple times a day and I have to carry her back every time because she refuses to walk
I think this summer I am going to bring her to the dog park a lot

Re: anyone have a fatty??
I have my dog on Nutro food for overweight/less active dogs. The protein content in regular dog food is too high for my overactive/hyper lab, so we've kept her on the diet food even after she lost weight.

Re: anyone have a fatty??
thanks guys! i was at the vet today for annual shots and the vet suggested either wellness, blue, royal canin, merrick or science diet for him. anyone prefer 1 over the other?? he also suggested giving him veggies for treats so you all were spot on! it'll be a PITA since all i have to do is open the treat jar for the other 2 and here i have to go to the fridge and give him other crap. maybe i'll just give them all veggies. but anyway, thanks again so much! you all are amazing

we have Lily on Wellness Core Reduced Calorie. She's shed about a pound and a half in about a month and a half.
Be careful with the veggies - give them sparingly. They can raise the pH of the urine, which can cause urinary tract infections. If you decide to feed veggies as a filler, give him a tablespoon of yogurt that will act as a probiotic and neutralize the pH. We're always in a constant struggle with this ourselves.
