Anyone good with designing / decorating - I need your help!
DH and I are disagreeing about what to put in this part of our house. It's a small area, but you see it when you walk in the house. I would like something useful and have two ideas, but he is against both of them (still working on it though). It is the corner that our staircase makes - it has two walls and the area is about four feet (with the higher wall) by five feet. I don't have any current photos but this will give you an idea. I appreciate any ideas -thanks!
It's the area where the wooden cabinet is.
Here is the same area with the railing up - again, where the wooden cabinet is (don't want that there).

You could put a corner shelving unit for storage or photo displays

A bench was one of my ideas - the kind with the cubbies underneath for storage because we have lots of shoes by the bottom of the stairs (DH says no shoes upstairs ). He doesn't really like the idea.

my mother has a similar corner in her house. since she loves antiques, she bought a victorian rosewood stand (about chest height, with lots of ornate carving). The top surface is about 10" in diameter. She currently has a cherub figurine on it, but it could easily also have a couple photos, or a fern.....

to bad DH doesn't like that idea, because i'm sure it would make you feel better that the shoes were away. GL talking your DH into it though.

You can put a round table with a fancy lamp on it or swap out the palm tree and put it there and then put the table with fancy lamp in the entry (bottom part of the stairs)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I can't really do a table with a lamp or vase (or anything breakable) as I have a son who's almost three. He likes to run around so I worry it would fall and he'd get hurt.
